you and eddie sat in the back of his van, doors open, with your legs dangling off the edge, watching the sunset from the highest cliff in hawkins, just like the two of you did every friday night. it'd been your tradition since sophomore year and you hadn't missed a friday yet.you could see the whole downtown from here and the sunsets were always amazing. it was the one beautiful thing about the cursed town. eddie had shown you it when he first got his license. he said that since you were his best friend, he felt obligated to show you his favorite spot in town.
now here the two of you were, two years later, same spot, same time.
"so, you excited to walk that stage, ed?" you joked, referring to graduation.
"hell yeah, i'm gonna stare principal higgins in the eyes, snatch that diploma, and flip him the bird." he responded, breathing out the smoke from his joint, passing it to you.
"sounds like a plan." you laughed taking a long hit of the joint.
"i just hope hawkins high doesn't miss their beloved freak." he pouted sarcastically, sending the two of you into a fit of laughter.
you passed the joint back to eddie as you tried to recover.the two of you finished off the joint and lit a new one, both of you clearly past the point of no return. eyes bloodshot and everything.
"so since graduations coming up, we should tell each other our deepest darkest secrets." you suggested, shrugging. eddie chuckled a little bit at your idea but went along with it.
"alright, well you go first, i gotta think of mine." he smiled, gesturing for you to reveal yours first.
you sat in thought for a minute, pondering over what your biggest secret really was. you gasped when one came to mind, making eddie jump.
"one time, junior year, i flirted with mr. mcguire so he'd give me a passing grade in his class. no nastily shit or anything, just a few complements did the trick." you shrugged at the memory.
"no fucking way! he's an old creep, no wonder that worked on him." eddie chuckled and shook his head in disbelief.
"yeah, yeah. now your turn, munson." you turned your head towards him, raising your eyebrows, curious about what the metalheads secret could be.
"i don't really have one." he shrugged, taking another hit of the second, almost finished joint.
"nope, your not getting out of it that easily, ed, c'mon." you responded almost immediately. you weren't letting him get out of it.
"no, seriously, like i think you already know all my secrets. i'm a open book." he threw his hands up in surrender.
"no no no, you've gotta have at least one that i don't know yet." you shook your head at him. he sat in thought for a minute.
"well, i have this one, but i don't think you want to know." he narrowed his eyes at the thought, starring at the ground below.
"no i definitely want to know. spit it out, munson!" you begged, turning your whole body to face him, now sitting criss-cross.
"this could like change the trajectory of like everything, are you one hundred percent sure you want to know?" he asked, moving his gaze up to the sky.
"yeah, but your starting to scare me, just say it!" you scooted closer to him, letting him know he could trust you, your legs touching, but neither of you moved away.
"alright, here it goes then," he paused, looking at you, your faces so close that you could feel each others breathing,
"i'm in love with you, y/n."
your eyes went wide, but neither of your faces moved, still an inch apart. you don't know what came over you, but his confession forced you to face the truth about your feelings for the boy sitting next to you.
it was silent for moment. you looked down at the boys lips, slightly left hanging open after saying your name. you wanted to hear him say it a million more times.
you leaned in a gently connected your lips, shutting your eyes. eddie was shocked at your seeming reciprocation, but returned it none the less.
you pulled back for a moment, observing the boys reaction. you couldn't totally tell, but the boy had never been happier.
"i think i'm in love with you too."
those words were all eddie needed to hear before crashing his lips back onto yours. your hands came up and cupped his face as his moved to your back.
you didn't know it, but eddie's sophomore year self would have been so proud of him that night.
because that night was the night he'd finally kissed the only person that didn't make him feel like a freak.
