A/N Just warning you that this is kind of a crazy, important, emotional chapter. Have fun with it XD
We made it to the hospital with two minutes to spare, giant heavy-looking grey clouds making Jordan speed even faster down the streets. As we ran in, hoping to beat time and the rain, I struggled to keep up with Jordan.
"Wait... up," I panted from several yards behind him. I joined him as we waited on the elevator, bending over my knees. "I'm... not a... track star... like you... remember?"
He smiled down at me teasingly. "Sorry. I guess I'm just too good."
I stood back up as the elevator doors opened and we stepped in. "Don't get too full of yourself, now."
He laughed, tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear before I could.
We got up to the correct floor and into the chemo room right on time. A nurse in bright teal scrubs seemed to be waiting for Jordan by the chair I had seen him sitting in last time.
"Ah, there you are, Mr. Davidson. I was starting to worry." Her eyes were a kind forest green as they shifted from him to me where I lingered near the doorway. Her face lifted even brighter. "Hello. Don't be shy. Visitors are welcome here."
I gave her a small smile and slowly strode deeper into the room.
As Jordan sat down and the nurse started to plug the machine into his skin, she said, "You know, I've been telling him he needs to bring friends by more often. But every time, he says I'm good enough company. I guess I've gotten too boring, though."
Jordan grinned. "Nonsense. You are my second favorite person, Matilda."
She raised a skeptical eyebrow. "And who is your first?"
Jordan only glanced at me briefly but it was enough of an answer for her. And enough to make me blush furiously.
I swear, Bec had to be contagious.
"Ah, I see. But I've still been passed up for someone better. But I won't complain. Second is a pretty good place to be." She winked at me before turning and heading off to probably put in some paperwork.
"That seat is never used so you can sit there if you want." I looked down to see Jordan gesture to the large squishy looking chair next to him. I gladly took it and crossed my legs Indian style to try and get comfortable.
"How long do these sessions usually take?" I asked, resting my chin in my hand.
"About a half hour, give or take. In the beginning they were a lot longer, but now they're not too bad."
I nodded, hoping that meant that the chemo was helping.
"But I'm betting that my doctor will also want to talk to me during or afterward so it might take longer," he added, looking a bit apologetic.
But I just sent him a sweet smile. "However long it takes, I'll stay here. Plus, I promised to be your entertainment so I'm not going anywhere."
His eyes warmed. "Ah, yes. I've been waiting to see what you'll conjure up this time."
Pulling my backpack from my shoulders, I slipped it onto the floor. He watched me curiously as I reached in and pulled out a stack of cards.
"Hm, I'm disappointed. Here I was thinking you would bring something we hadn't done before."
I smacked his arm as he cracked a smile. "They're not just any old cards, silly. I found these at the JFK airport in a little shop and thought you might enjoy them."
