In the middle of trying on a short, black dress with a sweetheart neckline that Mel thought would blow Gareth out of the water, I heard the blaring sound of my ringtone.

Even though it was muffled by the mountain of clothes on my bed that was undoubtedly covering my phone, I decided to bravely retrieve it.

Please don't be my parents.

Please don't be my parents.

I already talked to them for a whole hour yesterday and they kept asking me about work the entire time which was not ideal because I sucked really bad at lying.

Thankfully, the phone gave me an advantage because they couldn't read my facial features over a phone call and I would not be the one to teach them how to video call.

Marcus better volunteer as tribute for that one.

Old people and electronics were like oil and water.

They don't mix.

"Should I get it?" Mel asked, still rummaging through my closet like an unhinged rat.

Well, if the rat was a fashionista.

"No, I got it," I replied, waddling over to my bed in my not-all-the-way-on ensemble.

"It's Gareth," I told her.

"He's here already?" She asked incredulously.

"It's just four so I doubt it."

"Answer it!" She exclaimed.

"Oh, right," I quickly slid the phone icon to the right, accepting Gareth's call.

"Hey, stranger," I greeted gleefully.

"Heyyyy," he trailed off nervously.

I frowned.

"Is everything alright?"

"No, you are gonna be so mad at me," he mumbled in a melancholy tone.

"I won't be mad, I promise. What's up?"

"Don't make promises you can't keep," he sighed as he mimicked what I had said to him before.

"Try me," I declared.

"I have to fly to Ghana today to sort out a business emergency so I won't be able to make our date."

"Oh, that's okay Gareth. You gotta do what you gotta do."

I inwardly deflated.

I had been looking forward to this all week.

"So you're not mad?" He asked warily.

"Not at all, we can always reschedule."

"Thank you, really. I don't even want to go but it's an emergency and it can't wait."

"I understand."

"I promise I'll make it up to you as soon as I get back," he assured me.

I could hear slight rustling in the background that sounded like the noise of the wheels on a suitcase.

He was probably packing or something.

"And when will that be?" I asked with a light chuckle.

"It depends on how long the situation takes to resolve so maybe a few days or it could be weeks."

Wow.

"I see."

"Yeah. Thank you for being so cool about this. I feel like the world's biggest jerk."
