The sound of my name being called woke me out of my slumber and when I opened my eyes, I was more than a little shocked, but mostly happy, to see that Rafael was finally awake.
I know he lied, and we would have to have a serious conversation about that, but he had saved my life.
That was worth something, right?
I was ashamed that I had believed Rafael at first when he said:
"...Just let her go, it's not like it's that serious between us anyway..."
That had thrown me for a loop until he told me to run away as soon as Lucca shot the chain off my feet.
I had been wondering who the hell had shot me but Lucca told me it was him when we were in the ambulance.
I guess we were sort of friends now.
I was indebted to him and Enzo because he helped save Rafael and me.
I still couldn't believe Enzo tracked my location.
Normally, I would have been mad at the serious invasion of my privacy but they saved my life so how could I be upset?
"Mia," Rafael said in a husky voice, interrupting my train of thought.
He needed water because it sounded like his throat was made of sandpaper and sharp rocks.
"Here you go," I said, handing him a bottle of water before he could say anything else.
"But-"
"Drink first."
He sighed but did as he was told.
When he had downed half of the bottle, he took the cap from me, covering it.
"Okay, I feel better now. May I talk?"
I nodded in approval.
His throat sounded clearer already.
"Okay. Firstly, how long was I out?"
"Just a day. The stab wound was deeper than we expected. He got a part of your liver, but the surgery was successful and you'll be out of here in a few weeks."
I wondered if he remembered the very crazy thing he had said to me before passing out in the woods.
He glimpsed the balloons in the corner of the room and looked at me expectantly.
"They're from Gareth, Enzo, and Lucca," I smiled, thinking about how nice they were to get their friend get-well-soon gifts.
"Are they here?"
"No, they're at the station explaining to the cops what happened."
"Shit, not the police."
"Sorry," I grimaced, "but you were in bad shape so we had to call 911 which of course, lead to the police getting involved."
He frowned.
He definitely didn't like what he was hearing.
"If it makes you feel any better, your mom should be here soon. You were right about her never being in New York. When I called her, she told me she was in Dubai!"
He nodded as if he had already known where she was before I told him.
Who knows?
Maybe he did?
"Yeah. That does make me feel better."
"Great. Do you need anything? Your phone, or a magazine?"
He shook his head and then gave me a meaningful look.
