(Cora's POV from twilight)

I, 32 female, was the daughter a prostitute.

My mom only had a middle school education and was kicked out of her parents house at 14 when she became pregnant with me after her uncle SAed her.

My mom did the best she could to raise me by herself and put me through school. This led her to being a hooker, and occasionally a stripper. She'd work all night and sometimes during the day too, before coming home crying in shame.

I was able to get a part time job waitressing at 15 to help her out and pay her back for everything she's done and sacrificed for me. Unfortunately when I was 17 one of my mom's clients shot her before dumping her on the side of the road. I was devastated because my mom was my best friend and only family.

Flash forward to now I got engaged to a good friend of mine and the sheriff of the little town that I moved to when my mom died. Charlie is so kind and sweet and understanding. He knows about my history and thinks my mom was a strong woman and he wishes he had the chance to meet her.

Unfortunately his family don't feel the same.

His daughter, Bella 19 female, who is married as well as his ex wife, Renee 35 female, also married tend to make jabs at me and my mom and imply that I did/do sex work as if it's genetic or something. Charlie and I repeatedly asked them to stop, but they continue. They also have a habit of keeping their men close as if they think I intend to steal them away.

I've dealt with this behavior my entire life since I was bullied as a kid for having my mom work in the sex worker field. There's nothing wrong with it, but a lot of people have a misconception of it. With my mom it was a matter of survival and taking care of me. I've met women and men who do it willingly for personal reasons. I actually considered being a stripper for college, but decided against it because the first time I got on a pole I fractured my wrist.

The main problem arose when I found out that I was pregnant. Charlie and I were overjoyed and we shared the news with our family. I was congratulated by his daughters in-laws, but Renee and Bella pulled me aside and asked if it was really Charlie's baby.

I stared at them in disbelief before answering "Yes, of course it's his! Why wouldn't it be?" They looked me up and down as if they didn't believe me and said "We just wanted to be sure...." I scoffed and walked away.

A few months past and I started showing. Bella's MIL and SILs threw me a baby shower. While we were there they made more comments while I opened gifts "Charlie you should get a DNA test when the baby is born. You in case it comes out too brown" Bella said, it was a tease about me being African American. "I know an excellent divorce lawyer" Renee added. Both girls laughed and everyone looked uncomfortable and shocked by their comments. Charlie looked angry and if I was being honest I was pissed as well.

"I'm sorry, I don't get it. Do you think that you can explain it?" I said. They looked at me in surprise before a look of irritation crossed both their faces "You know exactly what we're talking about!" Bella snapped to which I shook my head and said "No I don't. What's so funny about my baby being 'too brown' and a possible divorce? Please explain it, because we don't talk about how funny it was that you divorced your husband over the weather, Renee" apparently I was amusing because one of Bella's SIL and BIL snickered and Renee's husband tried and failed to cover up a laugh. Charlie smirked at me and gave me a kiss on the head.

Bella's other SIL immediately tried to change the subject. I went to the bathroom, but when I came out Renee was there.

She got in my face and called me a smartass bitch before saying "You should've honestly expected this, once a whore always a whore" I don't know what came over me but I just slapped her across the face and said "I was never a hooker, Renee, and my mother did what she had to to survive! You wouldn't know anything about that because you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth! You and your daughter have been repeatedly asked to stop, it's not my fault for having enough of you insensitive 'jokes' that have never been funny or okay" I stormed off.

When I got back to the party room, I told Charlie that I was going to go home and take a nap. I told him to stay if he wanted, but he declined slightly irritated and we both left.

I feel guilty for causing drama and I was wondering if I was being too sensitive. So was I the assshole?
