Am I the asshole for refusing to surrender my niece into my sister's custody?

I, 22 male/female, am gay. I came out when I was 14 and my mother sent me to a conversion camp and I wasn't released until I was 18.

I still have trauma from that and I'm working through with my partner and I'm no contact with my mother and sister.

Recently though my niece, Renesmee 14 female, came to my apartment in California crying after she ran away from the conversion camp that my sister sent her to when she came out as a lesbian.

It was like history was repeating itself and I had to stop it.

I called Bella and informed her that her daughter was here, but I would not be returning her to her. I hung up as Bella began to throw a tantrum, and called my lawyer to begin proceedings for a transfer of custody to me.

Well Bella called our mother and they both have been blowing up my phone. I recorded and documented everything. They sent the police to my house to arrest me for kidnapping, but after explaining the situation and offering a compromise to send Nessie to a neutral 3rd party, which my mother and sister declined, the police agreed to let Nessie stay in my care.

My dad got involved and said that I was wrong for meddling in private affairs between Bella and Nessie. But am I really wrong for this? I'm just trying to protect my niece from going through what I did as a teenager, but please put me in my place if I'm wrong.
