. . .

SHIT. I messed up. I know I did. I knew she didn't feel the same way. I fucked up. I don't know how to fix it. I'm not sure I can fix it. I told her I loved her and she walked away. She fucking walked away, that clearly means that she doesn't love me the same way. I'm pretty she hates me and now more than ever. I confessed my feelings for her. Dammit Eddie, you're not the type to tell people how you feel about them. I've never done that before.

Why does it matter now? Probably because it was Hailey Miller and I fell in love with her from the moment I saw her move in next door. I didn't follow her. I don't know if I was supposed to. She doesn't see me like that, she sees me like a best friend and just that. Ugh, I fucked up.

I looked behind me at the sign. Everyone was gone and the owner of the theater was prepping a ladder to scrape off the paint. I walked over there to see if they would let me help scrape it off. I wasn't looking to get paid, I just wanted it gone. They did in fact let me help. I managed to scrape the words 'the slutty duo' and that's when Harrington appeared around the corner.

"Can I help?" He asked the manager.

"Didn't you have something to do with this?" The manager asked accusingly, looking at his face, all bruised up.

Steve sighed and looked up seeing me, and looked back at the manager, "I just wanna help." He spoke honestly.

The theater workers went back inside and got another ladder, the one they would use to fix the lights and put it right across from the ladder I was on. I watched as Steve Harrington climbed up the ladder and looked at me before he started scrubbing off Hailey's name with the rag.

"Why'd you do it?" I asked biting the inside of my cheek and clenching my jaw to stop the urge of pushing him off the ladder.

Steve looked at me and sighed, "I was mad and I wasn't thinking rationally." He finished scrubbing the first three letters of her name, "Peter said it was a good idea so I went with it."

"Who beat you up?"

"Jonathan Byers" He sighed and continued scrubbed.

I laughed, "Jonathan Byers managed to beat you up, the all mighty and powerful Steve 'the hair' Harrington. That's hilarious."

"You're the only one laughing." He raised his eyebrows and finished scrubbing off Hailey's name going off to Miller

"Damn, I'm guess you and Nancy aren't a thing no more."

"Yeah, She dumped me for Jonathan Byers, and I'm guessing your dating Hailey?" He asked.

"Nope. Not even close." I sighed and put my rag down, "She's complicated. I guess I'm complicated too, but she's different. I don't quite understand her yet, not fully."

"I don't understand Nance either, or why she went with Jonathan Byers."

"Yeah, probably the hair" I pointed as a joke.

Steve rolled his eyes at me, "Why is it that the female species are so complicated?"

I shrugged, "They're not. They just have common sense when it comes to guys. They know what they're getting themselves into and it's what makes it more complicated because they dip their toes in and decide if the water's too hot or too cold." Wow, I used a metaphor. That was probably the first and last time I'd ever do that.

"Dip their toes?"

"It's a metaphor. They try out a relationship, and decide whether it's safe and comfortable or if it's scary and dangerous."
