. . .
Eddie wasn't home. Wayne had taken him out fishing and they wouldn't be home till Monday night since they were going out of state, that's what the note he left on my front door said. My mom was out working. She had a long shift at both of her jobs, so I'd be lucky if I even saw her at all today. Steve showed up earlier than he normally does. It was eight in the morning and when he figured that banging on my front door wouldn't wake me up, he took the spare key. My mom had a bad habit of telling people where it was. At least she was only telling the important people in our lives.
"Hailey, wake up c'mon." Steve banged on my bedroom door making me get up groaning loudly as I dragged myself out of bed.
"What do you want? You're supposed to be here in like an hour." I complained as I was still half asleep from my nap.
"C'mon I gotta go to the store to pick out flowers for Nancy and I need your help because you know her better than I do." He rambled, opening my door and inviting himself into my room, "Hailey it's a mess in here."
I took a deep breath, "You couldn't have called me, or maybe gotten me in like an hour?" I groaned taking a seat on my bed, rubbing my face as he tidied up my room.
"No. I need Nancy to forgive me. I need to know that me and her are on good terms." He sighed, grabbing a jacket from my closet, "Now let's go. It's chilly out, so you'll need this."
He didn't hand me the jacket, just carried it to his car, just like a mom would. Steve is like my second mom, and it's scary cause we're almost the same age; he just cares about everyone too much. I yawned, running my hand through my hair so that it would look the slightest bit decent. I had forgotten the whole conversation about how Nancy wanted to break up with Steve till I was sitting in his car on our way to buy her flowers.
"Hey Steve, maybe Nancy doesn't want flowers." I cleared my throat.
"Hailey, what do you mean? Every girl loves flowers. She gets really happy when I bring her a bouquet." He said, looking between me and the road.
"Yeah, you also get my mom flowers almost all the time." I rolled my eyes, "Steve, you're like a brother to me..."
"I know. Where are you heading with this?" He asked.
"Right. Nancy's like my sister, and I think that maybe you should just give her some space." I said in the nicest way possible.
"Hailey, you're not making any sense right now. I really do think flowers will fix things."
"No Steve. Nancy was planning on breaking up with you." I said bluntly.
"What?!" He hit the breaks, sending my head straight to the dash
"Jesus Christ Steve, I tell you one little thing and you freak out." I looked at my forehead in the mirror, "Great, I bet I'm gonna get a bruise." I sighed and looked over at him, "You okay?
"I'm gonna go talk to Nancy." He said turning the car around towards Nancy's house, "She tell you why?"
"No." I lied.
"Hailey Violet Miller, tell me the damn truth." I hated the fact that he had included my middle name and I hated the fact that my mom told him my middle name.
"Okay, fine. Nancy felt like things between the both of you don't feel right." I frowned and looked over at him. "Could you maybe calm down a bit?"
Steve looked hurt, about to cry even. Nancy was right, maybe I should've kept my mouth shut. I did try to lie, but Steve knows me too well to know when I'm lying.
