"I figured it out!" Robin excitedly let out as she bounced up and down in the middle of the mall, looking down at us from on top of a bench.
"What?" Steve raised a brow at her and Robin scoffed and rolled her eyes, hopping down from the bench, "the code dingus!"
I couldn't help but smile brightly as I felt a happiness for my friend soar through me, "ROBIN!! YOURE A GENIUS!" I ran up to her and hugged her tightly before Steve speaking up again broke us apart, "ok so.." we all stared at him with blank eyes, "what now?"***
Why I was spying on Russians in the pouring rain with Steve Harrington I could not tell you.
All I knew was that apparently this is what their secret code meant? Something about a delivery or whatever was going on.
To be honest Robin wasn't that good at explaining, but she was my best friend so I trusted her and followed her orders, of course.
As we looked out across the loading area Dustin spied over and noticed men carrying boxes with the same logo as the Chinese restaurant, what was in these boxes we weren't sure."Come on open a box..." Dustin mumbled angrily under his breathe causing Steve to scoff, "Henderson it's pouring down, why would they open them right now?" The boy fixed his hair as he spoke and Dustin lowered his binoculars and gave him an annoyed, yet surprised look, "since when have you thought logically?"
The older boy rolled his eyes at this.
"Hey, what's in there?" Robin asks as another worker opens up a large door to an ominous room, I feel a chill go down my spine, but maybe it's the rain.
"Let me check it out!" Steve demands, grabbing the binoculars that are hanging from Dustin's neck, "no I'm still looking!"
"Let me see it!"
"Hang on!"Suddenly the binoculars go flying out of their hands, banging onto the banister we hid behind. Fear rushes through me as out of instinct we all duck down behind said banister, the rain covering our faces and dripping down my hair and onto my eyes.
It's only then that I realise there's a heavy feeling on my hand as my eyes fly down to see Steve's hand grabbing onto mine. I can't do anything but blush and widen my eyes as I look forward, stuck in place pretending I didn't notice. My body feels frozen and my eyes are stuck widened, if anybody was looking at me right now, I guarantee they'd laugh.
As soon as we've gathered what's just happened we run as fast as we can out of the roof top doorway and back to the corridors of the mall, speed walking down them.
"Well I think we've found your Russians."
Robin states matter of factly, causing Steve to roll his eyes and state, "yeh I think so.."
He turns to us suddenly and stares in silence, eyes glancing over to lock with mine for a moment, but then he says nothing and hastily turns away, walking back down the corridor again.Dustin follows after him swiftly and my best friend turns to me with a smirk on her face, "so.. are we gonna pretend you and Steve Harrington didn't just hold hands?"
I stand there gobsmacked, eyebrows scrunching as I try to lie through it, "wha- whatttt? Nooo we didn't.. no.""Uhuh.." Robin nods as we begin to walk side by side, there's a silence for a moment before she flicks her head to face me again, her hair splashing bits of water onto my face, "you know, I have 20/20 vision, the doctors said it was freakishly good Ruby," she leans forward, "freakishly good!"
I push her away and laugh, "ok super Robin, whatever you say!""I'm just saying!" She spoke up as she walked in front of me and turned so that she was pacing backwards down the corridor, still facing me, "I know what I saw..." she points two fingers at her eyes and then at me as if to say I'm watching you.
***
By the time we walked out of the mall doors into the gloomy car park the lights had stopped flickering, leaving us in complete darkness. The storm was still curling overhead as me and Robin hung to each other, my raised hand trying desperately to cover Robin's face from the rain.
