Two months later

Katherine was spending some last minute quality time with her Mom before she left for Switzerland. The mother daughter duo were interrupted by a ring of the doorbell and a scream.

Kat got up to answer the door, opening it to see a confused man.
She heard a gasp from behind her "You must be Lieutenant Wolfe," her mother brushed past her and hugged the Lieutenant "Admiral Blair said you'd be coming. Come on in meet the rest of the gang."

The Lieutenant stepped inside and he caught the eldest Plummer child's attention, the two were looking at each other lost in a daze until Julie called for the rest of the kids to come down.
"You've already met Lulu. This is Zoe, Seth and Peter. Kids this is Lieutenant Wolfe, he's the man that's going to be staying with you while I'm away."
A small chorus of 'hello' came from the kids on the stairs when an older woman came through the doorway holding a baby.
"This is Helga and Tyler"
"Ma'am. Baby," The Lieutenant nodded.

"Hello," a quiet voice from behind the Lieutenant called. "I'm Katherine but call me Kat and I'm the oldest. So if you need anything, feel free to ask me. I doubt the others will be very welcoming."
Looking at the gorgeous girl now in front of him, the Lieutenant couldn't help but admire her. She had a cute face, a good figure that was curvy in all the right places despite being what some would consider as overweight, and she had gorgeous eyes. He couldn't help but think that she was beautiful, but he was wondering why she seemed so timid, so reserved. She seemed tired as if she'd been up all night and the bags under her eyes supported his theory.

"Lieutenant Shane Wolfe, pleasure to meet you. Call me Shane."
A scream from Helga interrupted their conversation and the two saw her covered in baby sick.

"You have a pleasant family," Shane said sitting down in the kitchen Kat right next to him with a drawing pad.
"Well for the younger ones I don't think it's really sunk in yet. It been hardest on Zoe and Seth. But they don't really like to talk about it." Explained Julie as she cleaned up cereal from the counter.
"What about you?" Shane asked quietly looking at Kat who had stopped what she was doing to listen. The girl looked down and shook her head then looked away. Shane frowned at that reaction, he wanted to talk to her more for some reason.
"It must be hard on all of them" Shane said towards Mrs Plummer, eying Kat in his peripheral vision.
"Well Howard wasn't around much. His work took him all over the world. He'd be gone six, seven months at a time," called Julie putting things away in the cupboard.
"I can understand that lifestyle," muttered Shane, earning a curious look from Kat.
"Anyway about a week ago, someone broke into the house. No one was home except for Kat here," Julie gestured to her eldest daughter. "Who was sleeping, but I didn't want to tell the kids because I didn't want to scare them."
A scoff came from Kat who walked away after the last statement her mother said.
"What's up with her?"
"Kat? Oh she's Kat. She doesn't really get out much, but she's a great help around the house. The others aren't really fond of her for some reason but she adores them, so it hurts her that they blame her for most things."
Shane raised an eyebrow at this and got back on topic.
"Mrs Plummer I've dealt with- Ow! Oh my god!" A duck was biting Shane's ear. Getting the duck off of him, he stood up and looked at the duck in shock.
"Sorry, that's Garry, he was Howard's and he thinks that he's a guard dog. Kat! Come get Garry!" Yelled Julie at the end of her mini speech.

Walking through to the kitchen Kat kept her head down, but Shane could see that the girl had been crying due to the slight red and puffiness. Picking up Garry, she stroked the duck as she left the room again.
"Mrs Plummer I'm gonna go outside and take a look around" Shane said leaving the kitchen.

A few hours later, Julie Plummer was ready to leave and everyone was outside saying goodbye.
"I'm gonna miss you" she said hugging and kissing each of the children one at a time."I'll be back in 48 hours okay? Oh and kids, remember that whatever Lieutenant Wolfe asks you to do, you do it. Okay?"
"Mom chill we're going to be fine" answered Zoe.

The four adults at the house walked to the car.
"I'm sorry I don't do this very often," worried Julie holding Tyler.
"You're only going away for a few days" comforted Shane.
Julie nodded and handed Tyler to her eldest daughter whispering in her ear "If you like him make a move," causing the girl to blush heavily and shake her head, making her mother laugh before getting in the car.
"Do you remember the emergency numbers?"
"Don't worry Mrs Plummer, your kids will be safe with me," said Shane, once again eying Kat.
Mrs Plummer catching the look said to him seriously "Don't break her heart, she's suffered enough as it is."
Shocked, Shane stood up from the car and managed to succeed in withholding a blush.
"Don't worry Mrs Plummer, your little angels will be fine," smiled Helga from beside a cooing Kat and giggling Tyler.
Nodding, Mrs Plummer waved goodbye and the car left for the airport.
