"Courtney." Someone calls out my name. I can't tell where the voice is coming from, but it's loud and annoying.
"Not now." I mumble back, scrunching up my face.
"Courtney!" Their voice gets louder so I open my eyes halfway. I fell asleep.
I push myself up on Ian's couch and rub my eyes. Ian's kneeling in front of me and Shayne's leaning in the doorway. I groan as I squeeze my hands together to try and gain feeling in them again. "What time is it?" My voice is unintentionally very quiet.
"Just past 5." I slept for 2 hours? "The meeting ended about an hour ago, but I didn't want to wake you so I went back to the board room to work. Shayne came and asked where you were because he said you guys had plans." Ian hands me a bottle of water. I don't even remember feeling tired, or lying down for that matter. A thought sparks in my brain.
The notebook.
I look to where I remember leaving it and don't find it there. I scan the room and spot it, along with my laptop, on Ian's desk. My eyes dart to Shayne. His face is blank. What if they read it? What if he read it?
Olivia was right. I never should have brought it here.
"You alright?" Ian stands up follows my eyes to my things. "Oh, your computer was hanging dangerously on the edge of the couch so I moved it. And you were lying on top of the notebook, it looked uncomfortable." I press the water bottle against my cheek. Even though I'm freezing, my head is burning with a headache. I guess the worried look doesn't leave my face because Shayne speaks up.
"We didn't read it, if that's what you're wondering." I let out a relieved sigh. I should've had a little more trust in them. In him.
"I don't know what you two have planned, but you should go home and get some proper sleep, Court." He places a supportive hand on my shoulder after I stand up. "And make sure to take a proper break tomorrow, okay?" I nod sleepily, barely keeping my eyes open. "I'll see you guys on Friday." I take my things from his desk and follow Shayne outside.
He stops and opens the door to the outdoor area. I don't question it and step outside. The cold air wraps around me, waking me up easily.
"Here." He takes off his denim jacket and hands it to me.
"Aren't you cold?" I whisper, taking it anyway. He just shrugs. I look up to the sky, dark tones hanging over us. The sun is almost set, making it feel colder. February feels like it's gone on for far too long. A comfortable silence sets in as the both of us watch sets of thin clouds drift away. "Did you want to talk out here?" I break the silence, eyes still on the sky.
"Yes and no. Not the talk we planned on, but a smaller, much lighter talk." I drop my gaze to him, meeting his eyes. "Are you gonna go home after this?" He leans against the wall.
"Yeah, probably. Unless you want to go somewhere to talk?" We never really said anything to each other, aside from that we would talk tonight. "I assumed we'd just like, meet at one of our apartments?" I tighten my grip on my laptop, feeling the notebook on top of it starting to slip.
"I did too." Finding myself lost in his eyes again, I draw them away to look back up at the sky. A few stars are starting to appear in the distance, but not that many really show up at night anyway. There's too much light pollution out here. "Let me drive you home." My heart skips a beat.
"And leave my car here for two nights?" A quiet laugh escapes my lips. I step towards him and copy his positioning against the wall.
"I don't want you driving that far when you're this tired." He rolls against the bricks so he's facing me. I mirror him, my eyes getting trapped in his yet again. I bite the inside of my cheek to stop myself from reaching out and touching his face.
