It was now my favorite part of the day.
A bunch of teenagers get to run around. The boys on teams against each other, the girls on teams against each other, and the non-binary kid.
I got to be with all the girls since I was born with an innie (material girl 🤪). They all glanced judgmentally at me each time a second passed and their alarm to have a problem with my existence went off.
Except for three. Two were Gi and Mal. They gave me fist bumps and shrugged as if saying What can you do?.
The third was the hallway-lunch girl.
"Hey," she cheerfully said as she approached me. "Is this your team?"
I nodded.
"I didn't think— Nevermind. What are your pronouns?"
I looked at her with a hint of shock kn my eyes. That was the only time since Mal and Gi that someone asked me instead of assuming and then calling me it when I told them.
"Sorry, was that personal?"
"No. They/them. Thanks. And you?"
"She/her. Thanks." She walked away to where she needed to be without a wave.
Weird.
"Mac! I'm bored," Mal whined as she lightly punched my shoulder.
"Why? P.E is so fun!" I drawled.
She smirked. "Who's that girl you were talking to?"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "I literally don't even know."
"Okay... wait! Are you into girls?"
"Why?"
"Just wondering..."
"You have a girlfriend!"
He faced scrunched up in disgust. "Not for me, nasty. Just... You'll see."
I shoved her off me a bit. "What do you mean?"
"So? Girls?"
"Uh... yeah I like girls."
"Nice!" She walked away with her head held high. Even Gi gave her a weird look when Mal stood next to her.
*Time skip*
The class period was finally over. The coach switched me to the boys' team halfway through because I wasn't working hard enough, apparently, so I was drenched in sweat.
Now I had to wait for all the girls to finish changing before I could take a quick shower. Once I checked and the last girl was out, I stripped.
I couldn't help but admire my top surgery scars from a few months ago. My parents had finally realized it wasn't a phase after almost a year and basically got me into surgery as a birthday present.
I playfully winked in the mirror before jumping into the shower. It only took a few minutes before I was done and drying myself off.
I put my jeans back on and began on my shoes before covering my top.
Gasp.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't know you were in here!"
My head whipped around to see the hallway-lunch girl standing in the doorway, her eyes staring at the scars on my chest.
I froze for a few seconds before shoving my hoodie on. "I-I-It's okay." Shit! Why did I stutter!?
Nobody had ever seen me topless other than my mom since I had the surgery. It was a very new feeling. Especially when they stared.
"I was just waiting for the bathrooms to empty so I could change but I thought you were using it and then it went quiet so I thought you left," she rambled, finally taking a breath when she finished.
"Sorry. You can use it. I'm done." I felt like shit. It's so embarrassing to be that one special trans kid who gets in other people's way because there is no easy way to do anything.
"Okay. Sorry." She set her stuff down with eyes glued to the floor as I left.
