Chapter 17: The Upside Down

"Hey there," Nancy says, swinging an oar at one of the bat-like creatures attached to Steve. She swings at another, sending it flying to the right of us. "Quick! Hold it, Robin!"

"I got it!" Robin says as she runs in, stamping on the bat wrapped around Steve's neck whilst Nancy continously whacks it. "Get it!"

"Kill it! Kill it!" Eddie screams as we stand by, staring at the scene unfolding before us. I hold my broken piece of boat in my hands, ready to take a swing at any bat that attacks.

"Eddie!" I scream, noticing a bat flying our way.

"Shit!"

Eddie moves me out of the way, attacking the bat with an oar. He swings and makes contact. Homerun!

"Nancy! Come on! Please!"

Robin and Nancy continue to hit the bat around Steve's neck but it refuses to let go. Refuses to die.

"Nancy, behind you! Watch out!"

Nancy yelps as a bat sinks it's teeth into her sweater.

"Oh my god, Nance!"

Robin grabs it's tail, pulling, attempting to free Nancy.

"Robin, get it off of me!"

"Got it, got it, got it! Goddammit, shit!"

Eddie swings at a bat, breaking his oar. I notice another coming towards him. Swinging my makeshift weapon, I whack it away from him.

"Thanks!"

"Don't mention it!"

"Let go!"

Steve is finally freed from his bat necktie, but instead of letting it fly away, he grabs the thing by its tail.

"Come here!"

I swing at a bat flying towards my face, sending it spiralling.

"No!"

"Get it!"

Robin frees Nancy from the bat, holding it by its tail and swinging it into the ground with force.

"Nancy!"

"Go to hell!"

Nancy jabs the oar into the bat, whilst Steve swings his around, throwing it into the ground.

"Come on, come on, come on, you son of a bitch! I said come on! Let's go!"

One of the bats dives towards Eddie, but he impales it with the end of his broken oar, driving it into the ground.

We turn to Steve with the remaining bat, bashing it into the ground for a final time. I notice a chunk of the bat missing  presumably from Steve biting it trying to remove the bat from his neck. He stomps onto its wing, ripping away its tail and splitting the bat in two.

I look around at everyone. Panting, covered in blood, but alive.

"Steve!" Nancy says.

"Jesus Christ!" Eddie exclaims.

"Steve! Oh my god!" Nancy says again, running over to Harrington.

"Jesus H. Christ!" Eddie screams, throwing his broken oar.

"Are you okay?" Nancy asks Steve, looking over his wounds.

"Well, they took about a pound of flesh. But other than that, yeah, never better," Steve answers.

"Uh, do you guys think that these bats have, like, rabies?" Robin asks.

"What?"

We turn to look at her.
