Lara

When I had returned home I realized my first hurdle. My father.

He has spent years of his life hunting the very thing I have become.

Entered through the threshold of  my childhood home I started my truly experience my vampirism. The usual dulling of my scenes had faded and I felt bare. I could now smell the perfume that belonged to my brother from across the house. It was a piercing and sharp scent that overtook me however as quickly as it consumed me it left me.

I caught another scent and this time it it was not familiar. It was foreign and hostile. It caused me to withdraw myself from the house in fear.

"Come inside it's cold outside." My mother said in a concerned tone.

It came to my attention that it was cold but I did not feel it in a sense. I noticed it.

I walked in to the house now closing the door behind me now.

"I have a lot of explaining to do so please sit down so I can start before your father gets home." My mother said. I did as she told, sitting at the kitchen table.

" When a vampire is turned they feed from a certain type of human and that 'type' of human is the type they enjoy feeding upon. When you were turned you drank blood from another vampire that was not your maker thus making you into what you are, a reaper vampire. The 'canibal' in some way. This comes at a price however. You are in a constant mindset of hunting your 'type'. Usually a vampire would hunt their type and kill it then move on but when it comes to you your prey stays alive and so you hunt him for possibly all eternity. Which makes you the perfect weapon. " My mother said.

I felt overwhelmed by this information. Nausea rushed over me as I felt dizzy and lightheaded. I was practically swaying in my chair.

" How do you know all of this? How do you know Adonis? Why do you know them? What are you  hiding from us mother?" I asked with a slightly aggressive tone.

"I don't appreciate your tone." Mother said sternly.

"Then tell me the truth!" I shouting.

"No!" Mother yells. I felt a strong force the ran through me like a strong electric current, pushing me across the kitchen into the cold grey wall behind me.

I sat in there in silence. I was shocked. Why would she do that.

We looked at each other in silence before mother walked slowly towards the kitchen table and trembling pulled out a chair and sat down with a sigh.
She brought her hands to her face and rubbed her face with a sigh.

There was a cold silence again. Nothing moved. All that could be heard was my brother's movements across the house.

"When I was around your age I accidentally encountered your father." She said distantly. "I was a mage in Adonis's court at the time and had gone to cast a protection spell on one of our coven branches that he happened to be hunting at the time." She left a brief smile run over her lips. " To me it was love at first sight and maybe to him too.  I knew that if he knew what I was and who I was working for he would kill me." I could see the tears building in her eyes, threatening to spill. "I chose to deceive him. I made him believe that I was just a 'normal' girl. There are many things I regret but this is something I can't bring myself to regret." She finished her head now bowed.

I was shivering with a mix of many strong emotions. Rage, disbelief but mostly sympathy. She had to bare this secret for so long and now my decisions and current circumstance had open an old wound.

"I'm sorry Mama." I said softly.

She let out a chilling cry followed by a sob.

"Mama!" I exclaimed as she began to fall to the ground. I moved with a speed  unnatural to me and caught her before she hit the ground.

Her shaking hands reached for my face. She placed her hands on either side of my face. Tears running down her face, it was painted with a tortured expression.

"I failed her. She must hate me." She whispered sobbing.

"Who Mama?" I asked her.

She didn't answer.

"Mama tell me." I said concerned. Is she talking about grandma?

"Mama?"

"I AM Not YOUR MOTHER!" She screamed.

What?

She pushes me off and crawls away from me before using the counter to raise herself.

My brother, Thato was now standing at the kitchen doorway with a concerned and confused look on his face.

"What is going on?" He asks.

"When did you get back?" He asks me.

However he is ignored.

My mother rips her golden pendant necklace off. She throws it towards me.

"Manku uMamakho." She said.
What does she mean by here is your mother.

I take the dainty gold pendant necklace in my hand and realized that it could open reveling a picture of a woman who looked shockingly similar to me. She was older than me by maybe six years and her eyes were a dark dead black. She was a vampire.

I was flabbergasted.

My brother stood silent at the doorway.

"She was my sister. She was my beautiful big sister." My mom said. She was looking at me again with that same tortured look on her tear stained face.

"She ran away from home with that stupid 'Duke' of hers. I could not help but think who cares about tittles these days." She began to giggles. " Vampires" she said giggling. "VAMPIRES" she screamed then laughed maniacally.

I sat frozen in my place. Has she lost her mind? Why is she telling me this? What is going on?

My brother moved towards us but was ultimately thrown back by the same energy that threw me back awhile ago.

"She married him and had you. Lara. Lara. Lara." She began giggling again.

"That's not even your real name!" She started laughing again.

"Lilith. Lilith what a stupid name for a child. I think mine is better. Lara." She said as she lowered herself in front of me. She was still crying.

Her eyes seemed dead almost as if she was looking right through me.

At that moment my father and my oldest brother, Themba walk in.
