Groaning and fairly annoyed at his alarm, Vegas moved around in bed, covering his head with his pillow in attempt to drown out the ringing sound.
He sighed in relief when the room became quite again that he closed his eyes and found himself drifting off to sleep again...
When the same ringing pierced through the room again five minutes later, Vegas knew this was one of those battles he couldn't fight; he just had to accept defeat and wake up.
He sat on the edge of the bed and took his phone into his hands to turn off his alarm before he head to shower.
He'd been on a fourteen hour shift the day before, and had another scheduled in the next couple of hours. His head was throbbing and he could barely keep himself awake, but Vegas wanted to go to work more than anything else. He couldn't bare to sit alone in this room and let his thoughts consume him...
---
Vegas stood in front of this mirror, his bright red scrubs masking his tiredness, and neatened his hair. With the addition of his lab coat and stethoscope, he was pretty much ready to head to the hospital.
Without much care, he attempted to set the pillows and blankets on his bed right before he made his way downstairs.
'Morning, brother,' he said as he ruffled Macau's hair. Vegas grabbed a plain slice of toast from the kitchen and sat beside the younger.
'Ready for school?' he asked further. Macau nodded as he continued eating his cereal.
'You look tired,' Vegas commented which was ironic considering he was the one who barely slept.
Macau shook his head. 'I'm fine, just stressed out. We have a huge test today.'
Vegas smiled admiring how adorable his brother was and moved closer to ruffle his hair again. 'Macau, just do your best okay? I will always be proud of you...'
Macau nodded and smiled softly as a way to thank his brother for the support.
'Let's do something tonight?' Vegas suggested.
'Pizza and movies?' Macau added.
Vegas let out a chuckle, 'Sounds good, bro. I can't wait.'
---
After speaking to his little brother, Vegas found himself more enthusiastic has he headed to the hospital. He even listened to music as he drove there which was a very uncommon activity if you knew Vegas.
He walked out the elevator and into the cardiology ward, raising his eyebrows to acknowledge the nurses at the central desk.
'Morning, doc,' the nurses chimed.
Vegas smiled and headed over to his files when he felt a hand on his shoulder which caused him to turn around.
'Dr. Theerapanyakun,' the head nurse spoke. 'Dr. Kinn wishes to see you in his office.'
Vegas was not the biggest fan of his cousin, but since he worked here and Kinn was in fact the director, he couldn't really say much about this matter.
Vegas opened the door, obviously seeing Porsche sitting on the edge of the desk near Kinn. Despite being a very capable nurse, Vegas was convinced Porsche had no other role in this hospital but to always be 1 meter or less away from his husband at all times. But they were in love. It was annoying.
'Vegas,' Kinn said in a low tone. This was so different from the kinder and more gentle tone he used with Porsche, but he knew better than to take offense. It was not like they often got along.
'There is a new doctor joining your department. You need to show him around and assist him.'
Vegas rolled his eyes. 'Why me? It could be any other surgeon here.'
Kinn waited a moment before answering. 'You're the most talented surgeon here.'
Both Kinn and Vegas both were confused by the sudden compliment. 'Anyways, I think there is a lot he could learn from you. However, Vegas, he was the best at hospital, so I am sure you will learn great things from him...'
'Then why didn't he just stay there?' Vegas snapped.
'Your attitude. Stop. Just listen to me, okay?' Kinn demanded.
For the second time that, Vegas found himself having to accept defeat in a battle he knew he couldn't fight.
Just as Vegas nodded, he heard a knock on the door. Kinn stood up, causing Porsche to stand up too. The door opened and someone walked in...
'Vegas, meet Dr. Pete Saengtham, the new cardiothoracic surgeon. Pete, this is Dr. Vegas Theerapanyakun,' Kinn spoke in attempt to introduce everyone.
Vegas was hesitant to turn around; he wanted to stall this as much as possible.
'Fuck-' Vegas interjected the instant their eyes met. All those feelings of regret and misery he tried to overcome during the past three months came flooding in. Of all the people, why on Earth did it have to be the random guy he slept with?
Vegas abruptly turned to Kinn. 'I am not doing this. I won't do this. Find someone else,' he spoke harshly.
'I refuse,' Vegas slammed the door behind him. He couldn't for a second believe he just saw that man. He was so pissed he didn't know what to do with himself.
