Papa and I have been on the run for a year now. Like my dad said, we're living a perfect life. We are not the most rich and we don't have the nicest house. In fact, we live in a poor apartment in Romania, Bucharest I think but as long as my father is with me, I'm happy. My dad made me discover plums and it's the most delicious fruit I have ever tasted. I'm 6 years old today, well technically I'm 75 but I look and feel like a 6 years old. Papa told me about school but he doesn't want me to go since we're on the run. My father teaches me everything he knows. Now, I know Romanian too. My dad took me out today to choose some things for my birthday. We bought a cake with a beautiful princess on it. Back at our home, I put a pretty yellow dress with some flowers on it then papa called me to eat. I get out of the bathroom and join my father at the table. The dining room is very small. It's only a square table with two chairs and a small lamp hanging from the ceiling. The kitchen is small too. In fact, everything in our apartment is small. Papa left the only bedroom for me and he sleeps on a mattress in the living room. My room is beautiful, I have a real bed, a library with english and romanian books. I have a little white bedside table and the walls are half pink and half purple. I have three cloud lamps on the ceiling. I love my bedroom, it's amazing. In the living room there's papa's mattress on the floor and a couch. On the other wall, there's a small cube TV. The bathroom has a toilet, a bath that can be used for a shower too and a sink. But back at our dinner.
"Doll, how about after eating, we watch a movie?" My dad asks me.
"Yes! But which one? Can it be a Disney movie please?" I say with enjoyment.
"Sure but eat, it's going to be cold."
We continued talking about anything until we had finished. Papa goes in the kitchen then comes back into the dining room with the cake with lit candles on it.
"Happy birthday Lydia! Make a wish and blow out the candles!" My father tells me, happily.
I do it and wish everything would stay like this forever. We eat the cake and put the rest in the fridge.
"Can we watch the movie now? Oh! I have to choose which one! Will you help me?"
"Of course honey but I have just one more thing before ok?"
"Okay? What is it?"
Papa takes out a tiny box from his pants pocket and gives it to me. I open it and find two small necklaces.
"Oh my god! Papa, this one looks exactly like your arm and this one has your name on it!"
"Do you like it?" He asks.
I look at him confused.
"Like it? I love it!" I tell him before giving him a big hug.
"Can you help me put them on?" I ask.
"Of course I can, doll. Just turn around and lift your hair."
I do as he told me so and he puts my new necklaces on.
"Thank you so much."
"No problem. Now, what movie do you want to watch?" He asks me.
"How could I forget about the movie?! Could you prepare a bowl of popcorn while I decide?"
"Yeah, go choose and I'll do that. Do you want juice too?"
"Yes, thanks papa!"
Papa walks away in the kitchen with the dishes while I run to the pile of CDs. I take out all of the Disney's and try to choose one of them. It's so hard! There's too many. The sleeping beauty or Cinderella? Or maybe The little mermaid? Maybe not Snow white tonight. Pocahontas or The beauty and the beast? After a few minutes, my father comes back.
"Did you choose?"
"Well I have two choices left and you're going to help me." I say.
"Alright, show me." He says before sitting down next to me.
"So, it's either Tangled or Brave." I say pointing at the movies.
"What's the difference?"
I turn to look at him and give him a look that means 'Are you serious'. He doesn't say anything and I can find a bit of confusion in his blue eyes.
"You're serious?" I ask, full of judgment.
"Yeah?"
"We saw these movies thousands of times!"
"I know but I can't remember which is which. I can't understand how you do it. So can you enlighten me?" He asks me.
"You're really disappointing me papa but okay, Tangled is about a princess, Rapunzel, with magic hair that has been kidnapped and Brave is a princess named Merida who just wants to be free but her mother is stopping her from doing that. So which one?" I say, smiling.
"I think I'm going to take Tangled because Rapunzel reminds me of you." He says.
I smile at my dad before hugging him tight.
"Okay, let's go sit on the couch and watch it."
He puts the cd in the player then takes my arms and brings us to sit on the couch. The movie starts and I cuddle with papa. At some point, I hear a little sound. I try to find what it was until I turn around and look at my dad. He's asleep and the little sound is actually his snoring. I roll my eyes and poke him in the ribs. He finally wakes up.
"WHAT?! Is there something wrong?" He says, panicked.
"You were sleeping." I say.
"Yeah, I know. So, what about it?"
"We're watching a movie and it's soon the best part."
"Really?" He says.
He kind of looks annoyed.
"Yeah. Keep your eyes open or at least don't snores."
"I don't-"
"Shh! Watch and don't make a sound." I interrupt him.
"Okay, Miss Bossy."
We continue to watch Tangled. It's now the generics and I'm starting to fall asleep.
"Alright doll, you have to go to sleep now."
"Okay papa." I say, getting up.
We walk to my bedroom and I lay down in my bed. My father pulls the sheets over me then gives me a kiss on the head. As he was about to leave the room.
"I love you, papa." I say before falling asleep.
My dad turns around and looks at me. He smiles at me.
"I love you too, Lydia."
