A Man's Value

My mom called today,
Asking me to pick her up from the airport,
To which I stubbornly replied,
Would you care if my girlfriend picked you up?

To which she replied, shocked,
"You're still dating a girl?"
To which my dad pitched in,
"Are there no good men out there right now?"

And I retorted in my usual, sarcastic way

But inside, I can't help but feel a heaviness sink in,
That my lovely, my beautiful,
The one who has the bashful smile when I point to the wildflowers and say that Earth made them for her,
The one who cooks for me and we both laugh when we taste and realize there's no salt,
The one who holds me tight and tells me that we are worthy of each other's love,

That all of this still, isn't enough to beat a man's value.
