Chapter 22

Imlie flew down the stairs nearly colliding into Dadi on her way.

"Slow down, Madhu!!" Dadi exclaimed, holding up the hand that held her rudraksh beads.

"I'm so, so sorry, Dadi!" Imlie apologized as she steadied Dadi by the shoulders.

"Good morning, Dadi!" She added as an afterthought. Assured Dadi was okay, Imlie kept going.

Dadi's sharp eyes followed the flustered girl.

"Good morning?? Where are you off to in such a hurry?" Dadi called out in her thin voice.

"Home!" Imlie called over her shoulder and came to a stop.

Dadi shook her head not sure what to make of Madhu this morning. Resuming a soft chant she made her way to the prayer area for morning prayers.

Imlie bit her lip.

She should slow down for just two seconds and tell Maa she was leaving at least.

Changing direction she headed to the kitchen and peeked in. No Maa.

Temple? Garden?

She made her way to the family temple reaching the beautiful scalloped arched entryway the same time as Dadi.

With a polite smile, she stood aside, plastered to a tall white marble column, allowing Dadi to enter the large peaceful space first.

"Maa?" She called out to Narmada who put down a large basket of flowers on the cool speckled granite floor in front of the deities.

Imlie hurriedly slipped off her footwear, folded her hands and sent up a desperate prayer in front of the white marble statue of Krishna, quickly scanning the rest of the deities.

There! Ganesha! Let me escape quickly without any obstacles, Bappa!! She prayed fervently.

"Maa!" She waved her hands, tried to attract Narmada's attention from the lamps she was readying for morning prayers.

"I'm here. What's going on? You're up early." Narmada smiled, glancing over her shoulder at Imlie.
