They'd been at the DEO headquarters for several hours now. Eliza had met and held her granddaughters, Kara had spent 2 hours in the solar chamber, Lena, Brainy and Eliza had set up in a lab and started working. In the four hours the trio spent in the lab, they'd discovered nothing new to help them with Leigh's illness.
"Maybe we should take a break," Eliza suggested. They'd been at it for so long and remained empty-handed. It was clear that they needed to step back if only for a few minutes.
"I just need five more minutes. I think I'm close." Lena declined. She wasn't. But she couldn't not work, even if she was grasping at straws at this point.
"That's what you said an hour ago when Kara stopped in with lunch," Eliza had made her way over to Lena's workstation. With the care of a mother, she gently grasped Lena's hand and led them both out of the lab.It was a short walk out of the lab and over to where Kara was with the twins.
"Look who I've brought," Eliza said as she entered the room; Lena's hand still firmly held in her own.Kara visibly lit up at the sight of Lena. And the girls in her lap were more than happy to see their brunette mother after not seeing her for hours on end.
"How are you guys? Are you hungry? Have you eaten? I saved some lunch for you guys if you want it?" At the mention of food, Lena's stomach did the unthinkable. Her face flushed at the growl that erupted. Lori giggled at the sudden noise while Kara got up after sitting Lena down and handing over the girls.
"I'll be back in ten minutes. Just gotta reheat your lunch."
Eliza took Lori from Lena's arms and sat beside the brunette. They both sat in comfortable silence. Occupied with the toddler in their arms.
-
"That wasn't even five minutes. Maybe three but definitely not ten," Eliza said when Kara returned with 2 containers of lunch.
"I might've used my heat vision to reheat your lunch," she was a bit sheepish at her admission. It's just that she didn't want them to be hungry any longer.
Kara handed the lunch containers over and took her daughters from the women who quickly started eating.
"So how is it going in the lab?" She attempted to start a conversation.
"Okay," Lena didn't exactly lie. No one expected them to find a cure for Leigh's illness within the first few hours of searching. Maybe she stretched the truth a bit. "How were the girls?""They were good. They had tummy time after lunch. We spent some time with Alex and even dropped by to say hi to J'onn. We had a good day. Right girls?" She looked down at her daughters as if they'd answer.
"That sounds pretty hectic. I see you guys had a busy day." Lena said.
"Did they sleep? Kryptonian babies grow at twice the rate of human babies and most of that growth is done during sleep." Eliza asked.
"Yeah, Leigh took a nap during tummy time and Lori was in and out of sleep for most of the day. She gets that from me."
"That's good."
They continued talking about the girls while Lena and Eliza ate.
"Are you guys going back into the lab? Or are we going home?" Kara waited until the women had finished eating to ask.
Eliza: I think we're done for today.
Lena: Maybe a little while again.
They answered simultaneously, and that was where the similarities ended."Lena, there isn't anything you can do today. We're waiting on results that aren't going to come for the next thirteen or so hours. There's no use in going back into the lab." Eliza spoke.
Before Lena could object Kara agreed with her adopted mother," You can always come back tomorrow after work. Let's take the girls home and relax a little before work tomorrow." It would be the new mothers' first day back at work since they got their girls, and neither was prepared to leave the girls, even if it was with Eliza.
"Talking about work. What time are you dropping the girls off tomorrow?" Eliza asked.
"I'd drop them on my way to Catco, so about 7 maybe half 7 if they're fussy," Kara answered.
After Eliza held her grandbabies one last time, the small family left. Lena's driver was somehow ready and waiting when Kara called.
-
It wasn't long before they were back in the penthouse. Leigh and Lori sleeping in their room as Kara helped Lena prepare dinner. And by help, she just ate the prepped veggies and anything else she could get her hands onto.
"Kara," Lena admonished as she spanked the carrot out of the blonde's hand.
"Sorry, I'm hungry," the superhero apologized, unspanked hand reaching out for yet another carrot. Lena was quick to get Kara out of the kitchen, lest she and the twins eat nothing for dinner.
For the most part, dinner was a quiet affair. The twins had mashed potatoes, most of which ended up on their faces and clothes. Kara and Lena had lasagne with a kale salad, much to Kara's chagrin.
It was their last full day with their daughters before they went back to work and neither of the mothers could've asked for anything better.
