"Is everything okay, Kara?" Lena's voice was soft as she questioned her friend.
"Yeah?" Kara's voice wavered when she answered, the one-syllable cracking. To Lena, it sounded as though Kara was a few seconds away from crying.
"Kara," the blonde turned to face her," what's wrong?" Lena's hand had made its way to Kara's shoulder. Kara took a deep breath before opening her mouth to explain. "I don't know," she paused, looking for the right words, "it's just that she reminds me so much of me. But it's even worse for her. She's still a baby. At least I was 12 when my parents sent me to Earth. She has no one in her corner. How can someone just dump her outside my door?"
This was the most Lena had ever heard Kara mentioning her arrival on Earth. And from the little she heard, it didn't sound like the best time of the blonde's life. "That baby has us in her corner. Kara, no matter what we find out, I'm willing to take care of her. She's ours." If only Lena knew the truth behind her words.
Kara looked down at the sleeping infant in her arms. There was some innate maternal connection between them. It had no words Kara could think of to describe it. "She's ours," Kara repeated.
"Let's go get some stuff for our girl," Lena said, a wide smile lighting up her features.
Lena's chauffeur opened the door for the women and assisted them in getting out. "Would you like me to wait?"
"Yes, we shouldn't be too long. If that is to change I'll contact you."
The mall was packed, which wasn't the best when moving with a sleeping child. The hustle and bustle of the mall quickly disrupted the infant's sleep. She was rather calm when waking up this time, which the adults were rather grateful for. Neither of the women wanted to deal with a fussing or cranky baby.
"Since she's up, let's make this as fast as possible. Whatever we don't get here, we can find online," Lena said, ushering her friend into a children's store.
They made it through three stores before the baby's gummy smile had been replaced with a pout. "Let's just get a few more outfits for her before she starts fussing."
Kara sensed the baby's upcoming fuss and quickly turned down Lena's proposal. "This would have to do for now. Let's go." They didn't even spend a whole hour in the mall before they left.
Lena held the baby while Kara held the bags. Even though they only managed to make it through three stores, there were at least a dozen bags and a crib, stroller, and changing table which were expected to arrive before the end of the day. To Kara, it seemed as though they bought the whole mall while Lena could think up a whole list of stuff they still need to buy.
After getting all of the bags into the car and strapping the baby into the newly purchased car seat, they were on their way to Lena's penthouse. The baby didn't make much fuss with being in the car seat, so the drive was quiet for the most part. But unlike the earlier silence, this one wasn't tense with unspoken words.
"Is she asleep?" Kara asked Lena. "No, she's just very quiet."
"You'll take her up, and I'll carry in the bags." It's the same method they used when getting into the car, and it worked just as well with getting them out of the car, up the elevator, and into Lena's apartment.
Kara dropped the bags on the floor of Lena's living room. "How are we going to pack away with a baby that doesn't want to leave either of our arms?"
"We can try putting her on the playmat with a few toys while we organise a room for her. And if that doesn't work we could use the carrier." Lena said.
Kara quickly searched through the bags for the playmat and some toys for the baby.
After moving the coffee table out of the way, Kara spread out the mat, and Lena placed the baby along with a few of the newly bought toys on it. "That seems to have worked," Lena said after a few minutes of watching the baby quietly play.
Kara and Lena quickly moved the bags into Lena's extra bedroom. "Where are we going to put the crib?" Kara asked when she saw the king-sized bed that took up most of the bedroom. "When it comes, we'll figure that out."
They worked together to pack away the baby clothes they bought into the empty dresser. Lena took the baby's bottles and pacifiers into the kitchen while Kara took the baby's bath items into the attached bathroom.
"What do you want for lunch?" Lena asked the baby. The baby didn't respond but instead continued playing with the giraffe in her hands. "I was feeling for a salad, but Kara doesn't like those," at the mention of the blonde, the baby perked up and began babbling.
"Do you wanna go see your room," Lena cooed as she lifted the baby into her arms. She pointed out the different landmarks as she walked to the guestroom. "And, we're going to put your crib right here when it comes later, and behind that door is the bathroom where Kara," Lena's speech was cut off by Kara exiting the bathroom.
"I was wondering what you wanted for lunch."
"I need to stop by my apartment for clothes, I'll pick up something on the way back."
"Why didn't you say anything, I could've gotten my driver to stop there before we came home."
"It's okay, Lee, I'll just fly quickly and pick up the stuff. I shouldn't be more than 15 minutes."
Lena didn't know if she was scared to be alone with the baby or her attachment issues with Kara were acting up, but at the mention of Kara having to leave, she grew somber.
"Does Big Belly Burger sound okay?" Kara asked. Lena only nodded. "I'll be back soon," Kara said while hugging the baby and Lena goodbye.
