"Lena, calm down." The blonde's words did nothing to stop the raging scientist.
"Lena, listen to me!" But her pleas fell on deaf ears as Lena continued to storm around the lab, destroying anything she could get her hands on.
In a final desperate attempt, she reached out, grabbing Lena's arms; effectively restraining her. "Lena, please. Don't worry. We can fix this."
"I was so close. So close." Lena repeated. Her words muffled as Kara pulled her into her chest, but she continued; repeating her mantra.
"I know. We're going to figure this out." Kara whispered, holding her tighter. All she could offer Lena was her presence and the promise that they would find a way forward, together.
"Figure this out?" Lena's anger was evident in her voice. "This is the closest I've come to 'figuring this out' in a month. Leigh is only getting weaker. And close isn't close enough. I'm letting everyone down. I can't believe -"
"No, Lena," Kara interjected firmly. "You're not letting anyone down. You are doing your best, and that's all we can ask for. We're going to save Leigh."
Lena's anger seemed to deflate at Kara's words, turning into fear and panic. She let out a chocked sob, her body shaking with the effort to keep herself together. Kara just held her tighter, whispering words of encouragement and strength into her ear.
"We're in this together, Lena. You're not alone in this. We've got this. We're going to figure this out." Kara said, her voice filled with determination. She wasn't just saying this to placate the scientist in her arms; she truly believed her words.
Lena nodded, her grip on Kara's shirt tightening. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. "Okay," she whispered, "Okay. We'll figure this out. Together."
It took a few minutes before she felt calm again.
With a shaky sigh, Lena pulled away from Kara, a newfound determination in her eyes. "Alright, let's get to work then." She turned back to the lab, surveying the mess she had made in her anger. Kara followed her gaze and gave a gentle squeeze to Lena's hand, a silent promise of support.
"Let's clean up first, then we can get back to the drawing board, or we can pick up the girls and start again tomorrow," Kara suggested, her voice soft but firm. Lena just shrugged. The two women started picking up papers and broken equipment. The silence in the lab was a stark contrast to the storm of emotions that preceded it, but it was a calming silence. A silence that promised not the end, but rather a new beginning.
"We'll get the girls and go home. I don't think either of us would be very useful in the lab right now." Lena reluctantly nodded. No matter how much she wanted to heal their daughter, she had to agree with Kara; they were both too emotional to get anything done.

“I wasn't expecting you both for at least another 4 hours. Is everything okay?” Eliza asked as she ushered the mothers inside.“Things didn't go as planned. So we decided to take the rest of the day off, take the girls home, and spend some time together.” Kara answered. Eliza quickly understood.
“Are you sure? I can keep the girls and let you girls get a full night sleep. Maybe even a date.” The women flushed at Eliza's suggestion.
“I'm not sure about that.” Lena could barely handle the hours she spent apart from her daughters during the day. Now Eliza was offering to keep them for a night.
“I think it’s a good idea.” Kara said, more to Lena than Eliza. “We can both do with a good night's rest, and I'm sure there's something we can do to enjoy the evening.”
“Not to mention, the girls are enjoying their Grandma Eliza time.”
Lena gave a reluctant nod, agreeing with Kara's suggestion. "Alright, we'll take the night off. But we are picking them up first thing in the morning." With that settled, the two mothers said their goodbyes, each planting a kiss on their daughters' foreheads before heading home for a much-needed rest.

The drive home was quiet; both women lost in their own thoughts. As they walked into their home, a heavy silence hung in the air - a contrast to the usual giggles and sounds of their daughters. They shared a look, understanding, and empathy reflected in each other's eyes.Kara moved first, pulling Lena into a comforting hug. "We'll figure this out, Lena. Together," she repeated her earlier promise, her voice soft but brimming with the same determination. Lena nodded against Kara's chest, the solid presence of the other woman, a reassuring anchor in the storm of her thoughts.
They moved together through the house. Both of them felt the absence of their daughters, but it was also a chance for them to take a breather, to reconnect, and to find strength in each other.
They ended the night sitting together on the couch, wrapped in a shared blanket, their fingers intertwined. The silence of the house was deafening, but their bond and shared resolve filled the void. "Tomorrow," Lena whispered, her voice filled with determination, "we start again."
