Kara stirred beside Lena, her hand instinctively reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from her wife's forehead. Lena's brow was furrowed, her breathing shallow and uneven. Kara's heart ached as she listened to the soft, whispered murmurs escaping Lena's lips, words laced with fear and distress.

It was a nightmare, Kara knew. The telltale signs unmistakable. She gently stroked Lena's cheek, hoping the touch of her hand would offer a sliver of comfort, a beacon in the darkness of Lena's subconscious.

This had been a frequent occurrence for the last week. Lena's subconscious would attack her, plaguing her dreams with nightmares of Leigh. They were the same each time, she was too late to save her daughter.

"Lena," Kara whispered the word into the brunette's hairline, leaving a kiss there. Hoping to gently rouse the sleeping woman from the nightmare.

She repeated the name, as she gently rubbed the tension out Lena's brows.

Lena woke with a gasp.

She looked at Kara, who was watching her, worry marring her features as she looked back at her.

"I'm okay." She didn't know if the words were for her own benefit or Kara's.

"Lee-" Kara began before Lena cut her off.

"I'm going to go get ready for work." The brunette got out of bed.

"It's Saturday, you don't have-" Once again Kara's words were cut short.

"I'm not going into the office, I'm going to the lab." And with that Lena left the bedroom, walking into the ensuite.

Kara contemplated following behind her, but thought better of it, giving Lena the space she wanted. She looked at the bedside table, it was just after 4AM.

Kara sighed, the weight of worry settling heavily on her chest as she listened to the sound of water running in the ensuite. She knew Lena's determination to bury herself in work was a coping mechanism, a way to escape the haunting nightmares that plagued her. Kara swung her legs over the side of the bed, the cool floor sending a shiver up her spine. She needed to do something-anything-to distract herself. She made the short walk from her and Lena's room to the twins'.

They were sleeping.

"Lena, I really don't think you should be going into the lab today." She was standing outside of the closet, where Lena was dressing.

Lena didn't respond, she continued dressing. Trying her hardest to ignore the hero outside her closet, which was quickly proving difficult.

When she was fully dressed, she exited, walking straight into Kara, losing her balance in the process. Luckily, Kara caught her. Hands wrapping around her waist pulling Lena into her.

"Thank you." Her voice was soft.

Kara kept a hold of the brunette long after she was stable, appreciating the feel of Lena in her arms.

"Are you sure this is what you wanna do?" Lena answered with a nod. "Okay, well I guess, I'll let you go." And she did, unwrapping her arms from around Lena's waist, stepping back from her.

"What time will you be back?"

"I don't know," she shrugged, "before dinner."

Lena left the bedroom, moving around the penthouse, Kara not far behind her. Kara watched as Lena gathered her things, her heart heavy with concern. She knew that Lena's work at the lab was important, but the thought of her diving into it like this made Kara uneasy. As Lena slipped on her coat, Kara took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "You know, you don't have to push yourself so hard. Maybe today is a good day to take a break?"

Lena paused, her hand resting on the doorknob. "I can't just sit around and do nothing, Kara. I need to keep my mind occupied." There was a firmness in her voice.

Kara steeped closer, her voice softening, "I understand. I- I just worry about you."

Lena turned to face her, "I know and I appreciate that, I really do. But I can't- I need to do something. I promise I'll be back before dinner, maybe we can do something then?"

Kara nodded, though she still felt a knot of worry in her stomach. "Okay, but please be careful. If you need anything, just call me."

"I will," Lena replied, giving her a reassuring smile. "And I'll try to be back early." With that, she opened the door and stepped out.

While it was only a few minutes after 6, much too early to be up on a Saturday, if you asked Kara, the blonde was unable to fall back asleep.

So instead of remaining in bed she returned to the twins' nursery. They must've felt her eyes on them because moments later green eyes are staring back at her.

"Well I guess it's an early start for everyone this morning." The twins just looked at her as she spoke.

Kara smiled, picking up the nearest twin, Lori. The baby gurgled contentedly, nuzzling into Kara's shoulder. The other twin, Leigh, stirred, her tiny hand reaching out for her sister. Kara carefully scoped her up as well, settling them both against her chest. The warmth of their small bodies, the soft rhythm of their breathing, was a soothing balm to her anxieties.

She hummed as she walked, leaving their nursery.

"And what do you two want to do today? We can have breakfast at Noonan, then we can visit mummy at work." It was a brilliant idea, Leigh and Lori were exactly the pick me up Lena needed.

Hey, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I've been away for a while, ended up losing a lot of my drafted chapters and had to restart + some major writer's block. I'm not sure how frequent updates might be for a while, but I do have some chapters drafted.
