Home.
Home is where the heart is. And right now, Kara's heart belonged to everyone under the roof of Lena's penthouse.
Leigh and Lori were sleeping peacefully in their bassinets, Lena was out cold beside her, and yet she couldn't sleep at all. She tried counting sheep in both Kryptonian and English, counting the moles on Lena's face and neck, but nothing helped.
She'd been lying awake for hours, mind filled with worries that weren't even real: What if the girls aren't in their room in the morning? Or what if something happens to them in their sleep and she wouldn't hear? More than anything, Kara wanted to protect her girls, all three of them, and she wasn't sure she could do that without her powers. [Yes, Lena is also her girl]
So, she eventually gave up on the idea of sleep and stayed away. At least until exhaustion took hold of her.
She hadn't been asleep for long when the cries of one of her daughters played through the baby monitor. Her heart lurched as her eyes flew open, and she shot into a sitting position. Lena was rousing, also disturbed by the cries.
"It's okay, I'll get her." She knew how much the CEO needed the sleep.
As Lena settled back into sleep, she left the room, making the short walk to the twins' nursery. As she passed Lori's bassinet, she smiled down at the sight of her sleeping daughter. When Kara got to Leigh's bassinet, the problem became clear. "Someone needs their diaper changed."
She sighed before removing Leigh from the bassinet, ready to face the dirty diaper. After changing Leigh, she put the little one back to bed. Green eyes were still open and alert as she looked down at her daughter, but at least the crying had long stopped.
"It's still too early for you to be up. Do you want me to tell you a story?" As if to answer her mother's question, Leigh gurgled. "Once upon a time, there were two beautiful princesses..." She didn't even reach the part about the trolls before the little one's eyes were shut.
Kara checked the room: the window, the baby monitor, their blankets, under their bassinets, inside their closet before she returned to her bedroom. Within less than a minute, she was asleep beside Lena.
The next time she woke, Lena was no longer in bed, let alone asleep. All the blinds were up, giving her the perfect view of the sky. She wasn't exactly sure what time it was, but she knew it was far after the time she usually got up. Even without her powers, she could smell the fresh pot of coffee brewing in the kitchen.
Kara got up, stretching herself as she did so before silently padding her way into the kitchen area. Lena was standing in front of the twins, who both sat in separate high chairs. They were all dressed in their pyjamas and sporting a bad case of bedhead, especially Lena.
Lena turned to face the blonde when she felt Kara's presence. "Good morning, sleepyhead."
"Morning," Kara replied as she moved closer. She followed up her words with a kiss on Lena and her daughters' cheeks.
"How are they?"
"Well, they're not crying, and I've fed them, so I'd guess perfect. But they need a bath and a change of clothes so we can get to the DEO." Lena answered. With a smile, Kara watched as Lena's attention immediately returned to their daughters.
"Well, I can take care of that while you get ready." Kara offered. "Are you sure?" It wasn't that Lena doubted Kara's ability to care for the girls, but she knew Kara wasn't at 100 percent, and the girls were both very hyper.
"Go shower, I'll clean up the girls. I'll just take this." She stole the last bit of Lena's coffee right from her hands. "I'll never understand how you drink it like that." She said after swallowing the unsweetened, uncreamed coffee Lena liked.
"You're lucky I love you," Lena said before leaving the kitchen.
"Hear that girls, she loves me," her dreamy smile returned as she addressed the infants in the highchair.
Cleaning and dressing the girls by herself was not as easy as Kara thought it would be. It was almost as if they were tag teaming her; when she slipped a boot onto Lori's foot and turned to do the same to Leigh by the time she turned back to Lori, her boot was off and on the floor. This went on for a while until Lena entered the room, offering help.
With Lena's help, the twins were dressed and ready in seconds.
"Okay, you have ten minutes until my driver gets here. Use them wisely." Lena told the blonde. Seven of those minutes were spent in the bathroom, and Kara used a lot more than three minutes to dress.
