An aroma of garlic, oregano, and simmering tomatoes filled the kitchen. Kara was working on lunch, spaghetti bolognese, she had pulled the recipe out of one of the many cookbooks Lena kept in the kitchen and was following it. The twins were with her, sitting in their high chairs around the kitchen counter. Lori had gotten a hold of a tomato, the half-eaten fruit still clutched in her hand. Leigh babbled happily, watching as Kara moved around the kitchen, making lunch for the family.

Their lunch destination: L-Corp.

Kara had hoped a simple lunch would cheer Lena up. She knew the stress of the challenge to find a solution to Leigh's disorder was placing a strain on the brunette. It wasn't just the nightmares; she'd fallen back into bad habits: skipping meals, and prioritizing everything above herself. Kara knew Lena needed a break, a moment to simply exist, away from the pressure of work. A simple lunch, with her family, might be just the thing to remind Lena of the simple joys life offered beyond the lab's sterile walls.

---

"Mrs. Luthor is in her lab, I'll let her know you and the girls are here for lunch." Jess watched as Kara entered the office with a smile. She'd noticed Lena's reversion and was glad to see that Kara was there to take care of her boss.

---

Lena was initially surprised by the unexpected visitor. She'd left strict instructions with Jess that she was not to be interrupted unless it was an emergency. She stood amidst a maze of complex machinery, her brow furrowed in concentration when Jess called her.

"This better be an emergency, Jess."

"Yes, the other Mrs. Luthor," she'd flushed, it was the first time she'd heard someone refer to Kara as her wife, as Mrs. Luthor.

"It's Luthor-Danvers." She corrects her assistant.

"Sorry, Mrs. Luthor... Danvers is in your office, for lunch."

It shouldn't have been a surprise, Kara would often invite herself to Lena's for lunch dates far before they'd gotten together. It's just that she wasn't expecting to see the blonde until this evening when she left work.

"Tell my wife I'll be with her shortly."

---

The sight of the twins, instantly, softened Lena's expression. A genuine smile touched her lips as she watched Lori reach out a hand towards her as she entered.

"Kara," Lena said, her voice softer than it was that morning, "What a surprise. And look at these little bundles of energy."

She moved closer to her family. Kara was holding the girls as she sat on the couch. Lori moved over into her Lena's arms. Snuggling into Lena's warm embrace.

"I brought the girls over for a late lunch date; I figured you could use a break." She gestured to the food spread across the table.

"I can see, it smells wonderful." It truly did. She hadn't eaten since lunch the previous day, close to 24 hours ago. And while she hadn't been exactly starved as she worked in the lab, now sitting in front of food, her body was reacting.

"Let's just hope it tastes half as good as it smells."

They ate lunch together, Kara had made a serving of plain spaghetti for the twins. Lena, initially hesitant, found herself relaxing, her usual sharp focus softening as she interacted with the twins.

As lunch ended, Lena looked at Kara, a thoughtful expression on her face. "You know," she said, "I think... I think I need to go home."

"Was it the spaghetti? Are you feeling okay?" Kara's eyes widened as her mind ran through reason after reason as to why Lena would need to leave work.

"Yes Kara, I'm fine; the spaghetti was perfect." It truly was; the blonde had been working on her skills in the kitchen, mastering a few small meals. "The tests I'm running need several more hours. It's not going anywhere. But I... I need this... I need to go home."

A wave of warmth washed over Kara. She understood.

Joseph had gotten Kara and the twins to L-Corp, and luckily the driver had remained.

She helped Kara buckle the twins into their car seats, her touch gentle and reassuring. The drive home was filled with the sounds of gurgles, coos, and the occasional burst of laughter from the twins.

Back at the penthouse, it was quiet. The twins, exhausted from their lunch adventure, were asleep in their cribs; after having fallen asleep on the drive home. Lena and Kara sat on the couch, Lena had a book open though she wasn't reading, she to engrossed in watching Kara as she worked on her latest report. The silence between them was comfortable, filled with unspoken understanding and mutual support.

The quiet moments were precious to the two. Lena, usually so focused on her work, allowed herself to simply be present, enjoying the peace of home and the comforting presence of Kara beside her. She wished she could have more moments like this.

The tranquility was shattered by the shrill ring of Lena's phone.

It was one of her lab assistants she had working on Leigh's case, his voice urgent. "Dr. Luthor," he said, "the preliminary results are in. I think we've found a way to stabilize the blood cell production."

It had worked.

Lena's heart leaped. This was it. The moment she had been working towards, the potential cure for her daughter's illness.

She looked over at Kara, the blonde was already looking at her.

"Thank you for calling, Dr Martin. I'll be in soon to look over the findings." She hung up the phone.
Kara had her glasses on, she hadn't overheard a word of Lena's conversation. But she could tell from Lena's side that the results for whatever tests Lena was running were in.

"Is everything okay?"

Lena didn't want to get Kara's hope up, they'd been working on this for just over two months and this was the closest they'd gotten to anything solid and this was only preliminary testing.

"Kara, our test had favorable results. I'm going into the lab-"

"Favorable results? That's a good thing right?"

"Yes, it's a good thing. But this is only preliminary testing, it doesn'-" Kara cut her off with a kiss, shocking the brunette.

It lasted a few seconds, just enough for Lena's brain to scramble.

"Don't go there, we're one step closer to figuring this out."

"I need to go into the lab, I'm not sure how long I'll be, but I'll try to be back before midnight." Kara knew there was a slim chance Lena was returning home before midnight, with the breakthrough, she was sure there was plenty for the scientist to do.

"Don't worry, I have the girls. Take as long as you need."

"Thank you." Lena pecked Kara's lips.

That was two kisses in a matter of minutes, not that anyone was counting.

Hi. Brighter days are in the Luthor-Danvers' future. At least, that's what it seems like. Hope everyone enjoyed this chapter. All mistakes are my own.
