Valentines - 1915 - Flashback

The dancehall was packed, you had travelled into Small Heath with your sister, she was sneaking around with some unsuitable man, you had heard about the dancehalls in Birmingham and needed to see them for yourself.

The hall was packed out with soliders and their girls, you had spotted someone as soon as you entered, he was smoking by the bar surrounded by men and girls, all laughing with him.

It was nearly two hours before he made his way over to you, you'd been making eye contact most of the night from across the room, as other men spun you round the dancefloor.

"Are you here alone?" he asked, his hand slipping to the small of your back for dance.

"I am, I had to see what the dances were like round here" you smiled allowing him to glide you across the floor.

You can't remember much else apart from the press of his lips on yours, the way his hand slotted perfectly into yours as he lead you from the hall onto the cobbled streets of Small Heath.

He had took you into a pub, right through to the snug where you carried on getting to know each others lips.

In between kisses he told you how he was waiting for his turn to be called up for the war, how his oldest brother was already in France, his younger brother was days away from leaving.

You could see the guilt in his eyes, the pain of not joining them out there.

You'd spent the night with him, he'd took you back to the Shelby home, you'd fallen into bed, the words of your mother ringing in your ears 'a man wouldn't ever commit to a girl who just gave herself away'

But, Tommy was different his promises seemed believable in the dark of the night and at the first warm light of morning when he'd pulled more pleasure from you, you knew you'd never let him go too easily.

You can still feel the sensation now, of how he looked into your eyes as he made love to you on the small mattress in his childhood room, how he'd held you to his chest when you tumbled towards your fourth orgasm in the ten hours you'd been together.

No man had ever been concerned with letting you reach those highs, no man had ever held you after as you drifted back down from the clouds.

Tommy was different and you knew it.

Valentines - 1920 - Present Day

The streets of Small Heath had quickly become your home all those years ago, you never left Tommy even when he was called up to France two weeks after meeting him.

You'd stayed helped the Shelby family with anything they needed while the men were away.

Three years you waited for Tommy to return, the day you watched him step from the train still fresh in your mind.

Your Tommy was a different man, but with patience you finally got through to him, he finally let you in.

He wasn't unhappy with you, he wasn't overly unhappy with life he was just haunted by the trenches of France, by the nightmares filling his head even when awake.

He'd been working since dawn, when you pushed into the betting shop, it was quiet nearly everyone had left, Arthur was at his desk smoke billowing from his untouched cigarette.
