CHAPTER 21

     The girls were sitting beside each other in the car. No one said a word to each other although Riley's parents had A LOT to say.

   "I don't understand why you two would first jump on a boxcar into the country going who's knows where, then lying about your age to see Joshua, and then you didn't even leave a not or anything we were worried sick!" Topanga Riley's mother yelled.

   "I'm really sorry Mrs. Matthews, I was the one who made Riley come with me it was all my idea. Just don't be mad at Riley she had nothing to do with it." Maya told her. She didn't want Riley to suffer. Since she wasn't really. She was just going to go home and not have any worries. Her mother wouldn't care if Riley's parents told her what happened.

   "No! It was me too. I chose to go with her because, she's my best friend. I would never let her go alone. I don't care how tough she is she isn't going to go alone." Riley budded in.

   " I get it! You love your best fiend but that still doesn't explain why you went to see Josh!" Mr. Matthews said.

    "We had a good reason it was because Jo-." Riley stopped when she realized Maya giving her a please-don't-do-this look. "We did it because we wanted to see how Josh was doing. Sorry." Riley didn't say anything else. Neither did anyone else.

  When they got home things were pretty awkward. Riley and Maya went up to Riley's room and sat on her window seat. They just sat there for a few minutes and it was silent but then Maya broke the silence.

   "We have to make sure that judge doesn't send Joshua to jail. I mean, I know what he did was wrong but he just wanted to protect me and the time I spent with him was..It was a great..time. I-I just don't think he deserves to live his life in a prison cell. And yeah he can be a little rude and heartless o some people, but to me, he was special. I think I might love-." She stopped. Riley brushed Maya's hair back.

"We will, we can say it was all a misunderstanding we'll get through this." She gave her a shoulder hug and then Corey Matthews walked in with a sad look on his face.

"Girls, could you come downstairs please." The two girls looked at each other with a worried look and went downstairs. Walking downstairs seeing Topanga sitting on the couch hanging up from a what seemed an unpleasant phone call. Corey sat beside her and the girls stood near the kitchen steps.

"We just got a call from Lucas's father. He said that Lucas isn't doing so well not a single brain movement has showed up, and the doctor thinks that he needs a strong lawyer for this case and they have taken this to MY law enforcement team and I have been chosen to fight for Lucas's case." Topanga said in a light voice.

"You can't! You can't fight against your brother-in-law." Riley shouted.

"Riley, I can't choose what I fight for you know that! It would be wrong to not fight for Lucas he could be in a coma for the rest of her life."

Riley marched upstairs and Maya followed but Maya wasn't mad though. She knew that Riley's mom was right.

"I can't believe that they are doing this its not fair" Riley said with anger in her voice.

"Put yourself in his shoes. Imagine being in a coma for the rest of your life and I don't care who did it you wouldn't want them to get away with it would you?" Maya yelling a bit and tearing up but held it back. She had her head down because it was hard for her to process herself but she knew that if this was all turned around to her in the hospital Riley wouldn't care who did it. Riley would want her to be there for her.

Riley sighed. "I know.I do, but this is still my uncle were talking about and Lucas is my first crush. I really don't know what side of the court I want to be on..."
