I want to see him.
I don't want to see him.
It hurts.
"Hey! Naya!" Adrian called as she rushed by his car. Hesitantly, she slowed down to let him pull up next to her.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
He shook his head. "Can I give you a ride home? I don't mind."
"You don't have to do that."
"I do, actually." He took a breath, then smiled supportively. "Please let me drive you home, Naya."
Okay.
"Okay," she whispered and he opened the door, scooting over so she could climb into the car.
"Thanks," she murmured to the driver, a huge burly man slightly resembling a monkey. He grunted in response and pulled away from the curb.
Naya told him her address as they drove onto the street and he nodded. Then the car sat in silence, only the sound of gravel hitting the bottom of the car echoing around the large space.
"You don't have to say anything," Adrien reminded her as she settled back for the ride. "But is there anything I can do for you?"
"Why are you being so nice?" she whispered sadly. "You don't even know me."
"Ah! Yes! You're right. I don't. But you're my classmate, and I want you to be happy."
Happy.
"I met someone recently..." she murmured, "who made me happy. But they also make me really sad. I can't stop thinking about them."
Adrien watched her worriedly. "Is this person...a guy?"
She nodded.
"Do you...like this person? Like, like like?"
She barely hesitated before nodding.
He was quiet for a moment, then whispered, "Is this guy...in love with someone else?"
She was still for a few seconds. Then she nodded. "And there's no chance he likes me back. So I'm stuck in a mental limbo all the time. I'm so tired of it, I'm thinking of just confessing and getting it over with."
"No!" he yelped, then covered his mouth. "Sorry. But trust me, confessing doesn't fix anything if they don't like you back. You just feel terrible for putting them in a situation where they have to say no to you. It hurts."
It hurts.
"Are you—I mean, are you dealing with the same thing?" she asked softly. "Unrequited love?"
He nodded sadly. "The girl I love likes someone else, although she won't tell me who. I keep confessing to her and she keeps turning me down, but I can't find it in myself to quit. I just love her so much."
Naya smiled gently. "I don't know you that well, but I think this girl is missing out. You deserve someone just as amazing as you are." She flushed and pulled back, reminding him, "I'm not hitting on you, I swear. My heart already belongs to...the boy."
"It's okay, you don't have to tell me who he is," he assured her. "I think I...already know."
Naya laughed. "No, I don't think you do. I mean, that'd be too impressive if you did."
The driver grunted, rolling down the window.
"He says we're here," Adrien translated, although Naya had no idea how he knew that.
"Oh. Right." She gave him a grateful smile as she unlocked the door and hopped out. "Thank you so much for doing this. I had a really nice talk."
"I did too, Naya. I'm glad we got to know each other."
She waved as the car started off and she could see Adrien waved back through the back window.
I made a new friend! Not only that, but he's super famous!
And yet...why did he seem so familiar?
