One night while walking from my job back home, I found a puppy. He didn't look dirty at all. He was just wandering around and happened to cross my path. As he came under a street light a few yards away I noticed the collar around his neck. As he approached I knelt down to one knee, got my lunch pale out of my backpack, then removed the remaining half of my sandwich that I didn't feel like eating, and held it out to him. He stopped moving.
A tense standoff was now in full swing. He was close enough I could see basic things about him but I couldn't tell what kind of dog he was. He crept closer and snatched the sandwich out of my hand and devoured it as fast as he could.
Then he looked up at me and wagged his tail. Now I was close enough to see he was a little German shepherd puppy. I put my hand on his head and scratched his ears. He closed his eyes and took in the gesture. Then I checked his tag. I saw the name on the tag.
"Max
543-578-2056"I picked the little dog up and tucked him under my arm while I dialed the number. It rang three times before answering.
"Hello?" The womans voice sounded like spoiled milk smells.
"Hello. I found a puppy on the street. He has a tag with this number on it. I'm over by 51st street." I said thinking it was going to be cut and dry.
"If it's that little German bitch then keep her. My slut dog got out and I got 3 left to get rid of. Goodbye you cunt ass." He hung up.
When the disconnect sound went off in my ear I was in disbelief. Who the hell does he think he is?! What the fuck?
"Gah fucking asshole" I said stuffing my phone in my pocket. Then I looked down at the dog in my arms.
The dog was looking up at me and I felt my heart melt a little.
"Alright buddy... Let's go home."
*4 years later.
I walked into my room tired from the long day. Max hopped up onto the bed and laid down.
"You know I make the money around here? Since when do you get first bed Rights?" I said as I shivered from the cold room. I shut the window and went back to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
I pulled the covers over me because I was cold. I sat up and groggily walked across the room and shut the window. I yawned as I walked across my room and began to get back in bed to finish sleeping.
I stopped and thought for a second. I closed that window earlier... How did it get opened again? I tried to dismiss it and crawl back in bed but I was stuck in place.
A clang came from the downstairs of my house. I had the drawer next to my bed opened and the Glock 19 out and ready to fire. Aimed at my slightly cracked door. I stood there in my underwear pointing a gun at the door for what felt like a day. Finally I slipped on clothes and shoes. I grabbed my bat and slipped the gun into the back holster I had in my room. I recently bought a new one and this one was in the right room at the right time.
Max was curious what I was doing but she followed my every move with a curious glance.
"Here girl." I commanded.
She hopped off the bed and stood ready to venture into the darkness with me. She was well trained. I taught her tricks and how to attack but only when I say so. It came in clutch once when I got jumped.
"Alright max attack pattern alpha." I whispered. That wasn't a command I just wanted to sound cool before I get mugged in my own home.
I swung open the door and peered into the hall way. I went room to room checking them. I started to decent the stair and as I did I felt my heart beat in my chest. As I stood in the living room I heard a static rumbling up in the distance.
