Nini left the room and the second she did I crumpled on the floor, a wreck. Sobbing hysterically. I don't even know how long I was in there when I heard the door open and EJ stepped it. He cautiously manoeuvred around me before crouching down next to me. At this point I was sitting facing the ceiling, not knowing what to do. "Hey..."
"Hey EJ"
"you good?"
"Yes, because when you find someone on the ground they're always okay"
"Ricky, I'm serious, what happened?" I started crying again, remembering what happened
"Nini" I whispered before shutting my eyes as tears poured down
"Do you wanna talk abo-."
"No, I'm good" I said quickly. There was nothing wrong with EJ I just didn't feel like telling him and probably having another mental breakdown. So I stood up quickly.
"What time is it?"
"The end of the day"
"What?!?!"
"It's time to go home. At least for you?
"What do you mean?"
"All of us work at Slices after school everyday"
"Oh"
"Let's, go. You can always sit at the pizza place with us if you want?"
"Sure"
"C'mon" he said as we left the janitors closet. I went to my locker to get all my things before we headed out. I got my skateboard and put it in the back of his car. We sat in comfortable silence while the radio played in the background. I vaguely remember going to Slices when I was like 8 years old...with Nini. There are no memories I have of Salt Lake besides ones with me and her but that makes sense because we were attached at the hip and inseparable.
We walked in and I saw everyone attending customers. EJ lead me to a table before he went to the back to get changed into his uniform soon the two people who I haven't met before came up to me. "Hi" the girl said
"Hi?"
"Sorry, we haven't introduced ourselves yet. I'm Maddox and this is Jet. We're siblings. We joined around 2 years ago"
"That makes sense" I stood up and me and Maddox hugged and me and Jet did this weird bro handshake thing. " we have to work but we'll see ya later" Jet said.
"Cool"
"Bye Ricky"
"Bye"
I sat down again and started doing my homework. Apparently Ashlyn picked it up from my class and gave it to EJ and now I have to do it. Homework is the definition of torture. I was doing my math for around 20 minutes when I got really bogged down on a question. "Want some help?" It was Big Red
"Sure" he helped me figure out the question and we soon started talking. "Biggie I know it sound sudden but do you know if there are any places to work around here? One with good timings that fit with school? Sis me I moved back in with my dad I have to get a job"
"Sure Ricky. You know what. I just had the greatest idea. What if you work here?!"
"Nah, big red it's fine"
"I'm serious"
"You can't just hire me you're an employee"
"You're forgetting this is my family's pizza place and they remember you so they shouldn't have a problem. You can start by tomorrow? I'll go get you a uniform"
"Thanks bud. It means a lot to me" I said while smiling.
He went to the back and 5 minutes later came back with the uniform and an apron. I'll make your label tonight and sign you in to the record. You can start tomorrow"
"Thanks Big Red"
"No problem, but there's a needy child over there so I'm going to go before she spills her apple juice or whatever" he said while laughing
"Good plan" I said while he walked away.
I continued to do my homework while everyone came and stopped by my table asking if I needed anything, before I knew it their shifts had ended and EJ dropped me home.
"If there's anything you need just call me okay" he said
"Sure, thanks EJ.
I hopped out his car and went back inside, to see dad trying to make dinner.
"Hey, how was your first day of school?"
"Complicated."
"Yeah, I figured. How was Nini?"
"She kind of avoided me and then I apologized and well...it didn't really work" I said stuttering slightly. Please don't cry. Please don't cry.
"It'll be fine. Give it a few days and you'll be back to normal" he said comfortingly, patting my shoulder. "Now, where we're you for the last 3 hours?"
"I got a job" I said proudly
"Really, where?"
"Do you remember Big Red?"
"The ginger one?"
"Yes, we'll his family owns a pizza place and I have a job starting tomorrow!"
"That's great, Ricky!"
"I'm a little tired so I'm going to head to bed"
"Sure. Love you Rick"
"Bye dad"
I went upstairs and after I changed and everything I went to bed. I sat in the dark silently crying while telling myself that it was going to be okay. I soon fell asleep
