Mikey could not remember the last time he had slept a night without any nightmare. A peaceful might be freed from horrible memories he was so desperate to forget. A night of calm and pure serenity, or comfort and safety. His head resting against Sakiko's neck, inhaling her sweet scent as his arms were wrapped lazily around her waist, his body relaxed. His breathing was regular and gentle, he slept. He slept peacefully in the arms of his so dear lover and the only one able to provide him with the comfort and love he needed. The only one who was able to put his soul at peace.
No old demons visited him at night so when he finally left his slumber, the sky was already high in the sky. It did surprise him a great deal when his eyes caught sight of the clock: it was ten and a half. He had never slept that much before. He would always be up at five already, or even before. His body would be tired and his eyes surrounded by dark circles. Yet, when he sat up and looked into the mirror, he saw a well-rested man with healthy skin. His hair was a little messy, but he looked well. He looked like a normal man. His skin was not as pale as it used to be, and his pupils were no longer lifeless. And most importantly, he felt good. For the very first time in more than a decade, he felt good and he had not dreaded the night.
However, this feeling of contentment slowly vanished when he noticed that he was the sole being in the room. The spot beside him on which his beloved was supposed to be was empty. At once, anxiety shot up and his heart rate doubled.
"Saki-chin?" he called, worry clearly in his voice. Looking around, there was really no one. He swung the covers off him and headed to the bathroom. "Saki-chin, are you in here?" He called again as he peaked inside the water room. But it was dark and empty.
His stomach twisted as the worse scenarios immediately filled his mind. He felt as if he was back into his teenage body, on that day when Sakiko had been kidnapped by Valhalla. At once, Manjiro hastily left the bedroom fearing that he had once again failed at protecting the one he loved the most. Though, relief quickly washed over him as his eyes landed on the woman he adored so much. She was opening the rice cooker and put some onto a plate on which were rolled omelets. Sakiko had waken up before Manjiro and Emari. She had therefore decided to make breakfast for them (well, in fact, it was mostly for her as she was getting hungry). As she was closing the rice cooker, she felt a pair of arms wrapping around her waist and a head resting on her shoulder. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Manjiro who then buried his face in the crook of her neck.
"I woke up and you weren't there...," he breathed. "I thought... I thought you left...,"
Her eyes soften. Mikey had never healed the old trauma that hunted him. His biggest fear was to lose the one he loved the most and therefore had a tendency to jump to the worse conclusions.
"I'm right here," she kissed his hair which did ease his anxiety.
"Good mowning...,"
The couple broke away and move their gazes to the door. A smile inevitably garnished their lips when they saw Emari slowly walking into the kitchen. Dressed into her onesie while with Mr. Tora behind her, she rubbed her eye sleepily. When she saw Manjiro, a grin broke on her lips. She walked to him and hugged his leg.
"Mr. Mikey... You'll eat with us today? Emari is happy...,"
The smile on his lips slightly grew and he carried her in his arms before sitting on a stool and sitting the kid on his lap. Emari wrapped her little arms around him and fell back asleep. Sakiko let out a little chuckle at the sight. Emari slept peacefully in Manjiro's arms as he looked at her with tenderness and gently patted her head. She had once believed that it was a sight she would have never witnessed. So it filled Sakiko's heart to see her daughter so at ease with her dad.
