As Ian Eastwood waited for the group to arrive that he was doing a dance workshop for, he was drawn to the music coming from one of the studios. The door was open, so he peaked in. He saw two people inside; a girl and an older guy giving her instructions. She was obviously being taught how to do breakdancing power moves. He didn't like the guy's coaching style, as he only gave negative feedback. His group arrived and Ian left, forgetting about them until the next day.
Ian saw them again, as the two were in the same studio, he noticed this time the girl's left wrist was wrapped. Her coach didn't care, he still made her practice the move from the other day. She never said a word, but he clearly was not happy with the dancing.
"You're wasting your time and mine. You need to do pushups to build up your stamina."
"The guys on the crew say you're wrong brother," Jin replied quietly.
"They haven't seen you dance lately. I've got shit to do."
Ian moved away from the door as the guy left. But the music continued, so he went back to watching. She had started the whole routine again, but the power move she still failed. A few times she landed badly and he thought for sure she'd give up. But again and again she tried. Swearing with colourful profanity, she stopped. After shaking out her wrapped wrist, she took off her shoes and socks, before changing the music. The song 18 & Life To Go, by Skid Row, filled the room. He was curious what she was going to do and even when his group came, he told them to start warming up without him. The girl began to dance contemporary, completely shocking him. He wanted to stay and watch, but work was why he was there that night.
Jin Bong never noticed that she was being observed. She vowed long ago that her brother wouldn't break her. When she was little he had always been willing to teach her new moves. When he had joined a b-boy crew, the guys had taught her tricks too. But when she became a teenager on the verge of womanhood, her brother no longer would invite her to their practices, or teach her. Then things went from bad to worse, when their parents divorced. She knew her brother's hostility towards her was due to their mother blaming her. It got so bad, that she had to move out at sixteen. Jin was still in high school, so she danced on the street for money. Battles for money helped too. When she graduated high school, she got a job and saved enough to go to college. Not once did she give up, even when life seemed to be a big pit of quicksand. Due to financial reasons, she'd had to quit college after her first year. From the street and the internet she continued to grow as a b-girl and dancer. Then came the day that she crashed a practice session of her brother's and the crew welcomed her back. But her brother wasn't satisfied. If she was to compete with them, he wanted her to do power moves. She was happy that he'd been willing to train her, until she realized his hate had festered and he wanted to take away her desire to dance. She refused to back down.
Ian began to arrive earlier every day, to check on the girl's progress. He was only in Seattle for ten days, before returning to his tour in Boston. Some nights, after he was done coaching dancers himself, he would watch the two work. Not once did he interfere, even though there were times he wanted to punch her coach. He noticed that she danced freestyle after her training was over. The music choice ranged from classic to hip hop and rap to heavy metal. He liked that she'd throw some krumping in with her popping and breaking, while the heavy metal made the mirrors rattle. If she was depressed, then contemporary was where she channelled it. Ian hoped one day soon the brother would leave and never come back, because he wanted to work with her himself. Until then he would just wait and randomly watch.
