Jin stepped off the plane and followed the crowd through the terminal. She was proud to show her new ID and the required paperwork. Tomorrow she'd be taken to the Immigration Office for an Alien Registration Certificate and to undergo finger printing. Jin would also find out if she needed to get a Multiple Re-Entry permit, for future departures from South Korea. Her grandmother already had her residence permit. If Jin had to do an interview or write a language proficiency test, she could now read, write and speak South Korean and had knowledge of culture and South Korean history. She was prepared to remain permanently.
Jay was on tour and wouldn't be meeting her at the airport, instead Hep was there to greet her. The party that Jin had requested, would be the following week, when Jay, Loco, Ugly Duck and Dj Pumkin would be back in Seoul. That also gave time for Jin to get over the jet lag, since she'd not had time to condition herself in advance this time.
"Hep!" Jin yelled excitedly.
"Jin!" He replied and accepted her hug. "Is this all your luggage?"
"Yup. It's a fresh start and anyway I didn't have much to bring with me."
"Am I taking you to your grandmother's place first?"
Jin's smile fell a little. "She's in the hospital. I'd like to go there first, just to say hello. Then to her place. Is that okay?"
"For you, anything. I'm just glad you had a safe flight."
"Can you believe it? This is home now! I can't wait to see everyone... Thanks for picking me up."
"We're all glad you're back and staying.... any chance you'll be working for Jehan again at Cafe Dudart?"
"Not sure, probably. First thing I've got to do is find out what's going on with my grandma."
"Right. Everything else can wait."
Hep took Jin to the hospital and helped locate her grandmother's room. She checked in at the nurses station, requesting to speak to the doctor. They found out Grandma Ree had dementia and was having problems performing everyday functions. She'd some how burned her hand badly, while cooking, causing the hospitalization. It would be another two weeks, before she could leave the hospital. Jin's grandmother had little energy and the visit was short, but a happy reunion.
Afterwards in the car, Hep asked, "how old is your grandmother?"
"I think she's 71. When I was here before R16, I noticed she was becoming forgetful and her arthritis gave her a lot of pain. I'm glad I'm here to assist her. She's helped me so much." Jin gave directions to her grandmother's house, in Seongsan-dong.
"This is a nice villa," Hep said as they pulled up.
"It's a three bedroom, 2 bath place, but the third bedroom is so small it could only be used as an office or storage room. Originally she was thinking of selling it, but now that I'm going to live with her too, that's changed." Jin unlocked the door and they went inside.
Hep said, "wow it's so clean. I guess I thought it would be cluttered due to her health issues."
"You and me both. Just leave my suitcase in the hall," Jin suggested. She picked up a pile of unopened mail. "These five are bills right?"
"Yup. Since when can you read Korean?"
Jin smiled, "I can write it too."
"Been busy back in Seattle huh?" It was a rhetorical question. Hep then asked, "which room is yours?"
Jin went upstairs. "See how awesome she is... it's furnished and everything."
"What's that paperwork?" Hep asked pointing to the bed.
