RIVERDALE HIGH

APRIL 20TH, 2018

RIVERDALE

For a split second, everything seemed good. The Jones twins weren't being uprooted from the place they called home. The Southside Serpents were no longer on life support. And most importantly, Hiram Lodge had been outsmarted, even if the victory was only temporary.

Yet in a town like Riverdale, if something seemed too good to be true . . . it probably was.

''Students, faculty and staff, before we inaugurate Archie Andrews as our new student council president, please rise for our national anthem.''

Everyone obeyed Principal Weatherbee, whether it was forced or not, and stood with their hands over their hearts. Josie took his place at the microphone stand, singing ❛The Star-Spangled Banner❜ beautifully.

The McCoy girl was hardly halfway through the song when the auditorium doors clattered open. Sheriff Minetta entered, flanked by two police officers, their star-shaped badges glinting dangerously in the daylight.

They made a bee-line for Archie, who sat at the front of the floor, amongst a few teachers and other honourable students. Mia's heart plumetted into pity at the expression on his face; he was geniunely confused, hands behind his back in those brutal handcuffs.

''Sheriff Minetta, what are you doing?''

''Archie Andrews, you're under arrest for the murder of Shadow Lake resident, Cassidy Bullock.''

''What? I didn't kill him . . . ''

''You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney.''

An uproar of whisperings and outbursts infected the sea of students, spreading from one to the next like wildfire. Granted, Mia didn't know Archie further than him being her brother's best friend, but she doubted he of all people had the capability to kill someone.

It was the unthinkable — the arrest of Archie Andrews.

She also didn't know how something like this could have even manifested. But, there was an itch at the back of her brain reserved for people to keep an eye on, and she would bet anything it had something to do with the devil himself, Hiram Lodge.

After all, he always did see himself at the heart of all the tragedies that plagued Riverdale. Well, if you didn't count Hal Cooper running around and gunning innocent people down; he was the exception, not the rule.
