That night it was time for bed, I got Colt changed into some pajamas and was tucking him in as Curtis watched from the door.
"Good night Curtis." Colt said and he smiled at Colt.
"Good night buddy, see you in the morning." He said. I hugged and kissed Colt.
"Mommy, aren't you sleeping in here with me?" Colt asked as I went to get up.
"Uh, no buddy, you get your own bed and room now just for you." I said and he whimpered. I looked at Curtis.
"Is it okay if I lay with him until he falls asleep?" I asked and Curtis nodded and left the room shutting the door. I got behind Colt on the bed like we used to sleep in the bunk. I held on to him and hummed the song I always did until he fell asleep.
***CURTIS POV***
I knew this was all new to her and I didn't like how things were going for us tonight, she was silent all through dinner, only talking and dealing with Colt. I just needed her to come to bed so we could talk. I knew it was going to be weird getting into bed with me, but I was fully intending to make her feel comfortable and put a barrier of pillows and blankets between us for now. I set up the barrier and just waited for her. I came to sometime later realizing I drifted off to sleep. I looked over the barrier and the bed was empty. I groaned and got out of bed, but I didn't see Esme in the living area either thinking she slept on the couch. I start to panic as I open Colt's bedroom door and found them both on his bed fast asleep. I sighed and walked over to Esme. I picked her up carefully and she moaned.
"I got you Esme." I whispered to her and she actually placed her head on my shoulder as I bridal carried her to the bedroom and put her on her side of the bed and covered her up. "This is where you sleep." I said even thought she was asleep and I went and got on my side of the bed and went back to sleep.
***NORMAL POV***
I woke up the next morning expecting to be with Colt, but I was in a bed I didn't know and there was a barrier in the middle of the bed. I peeked over and saw the bed empty. I heard laughing coming from the sitting area and I opened the bedroom door to see Colt and Curtis sitting having breakfast and sharing funny stories.
"Mommy!" Colt said excited to see me.
"Good morning sweet boy. How did you sleep?" I asked kissing the top of his head.
"Good. I was finally comfy." He said and I smiled.
"How did you sleep?" Curtis asked me not looking up from his plate as I made my own plate. I couldn't believe I was eating real food again. Scrambled eggs, bacon, toast...food. I just sat at the table.
"I slept good thank you." I said and he looked up at me.
"You fell asleep with Colt..." He said and I sighed.
"Curtis, please understand this how life had been for him and I for 5 years, me for 10." I said and he groaned. "We didn't get lucky enough to know people to give us a ticket to the front of the train." I said and Curtis clenched his jaw. He went to say something but noticed Colt watching our exchange.
"Mason wants to meet with you both today." Curtis said changing the subject and I sighed.
"Why?" I asked.
"Make sure you know what's expected of you." Curtis said.
"So, it's a marriage meeting?" I asked and he nodded. "I told you I'm not getting married next week Curtis." I said and he slammed his fist on the table making me jump, Colt whimpered as he rushed over to me and cuddled into my side.
"You will do what Mason orders! She gets her info from Wilford and we listen to what he says!" Curtis said in a raised voice and Colt started to whimper more into my side.
"Curtis, stop please. You're scaring him!" I said annoyed and he took a deep breath. I motioned for Colt to go sit back down. He didn't want to leave my side, I gave him a kiss on his cheek to reassure him it was okay, so he went and sat back down.
"Sorry about that Colt." Curtis said and Colt just looked at his plate. I looked at Curtis and sighed.
"When do we have to meet Mason?" I asked and he looked at the clock on the wall.
"In a few hours." Curtis said and I nodded.
"I will make sure we both look presentable when we go." I said and Curtis smiled.
"I can help get Colt ready if you would like." Curtis said and I looked at Colt.
"Would you like Curtis or me help you get ready?" I asked Colt and he smiled at Curtis.
"Curtis...please...?" He asked and Curtis smiled with a nod.
"Sure thing bud, we can make you look like a little gentleman." Curtis said and I sighed.

I was sitting in mine and Curtis' room on the foot of the bed just looking at the dress lying beside me. It was a simple light pink dress the was pleated all down the front and sinched at the waist. It hit at my knee and I had beige heels to wear with it. I hadn't been in heels in forever so this was going to be an adventure. One I was dressed I was standing at the mirror in the bedroom fixing my hair as Curtis walked in the room. He stood there is a white button up with light pink tie and black dress slacks.
"You look gorgeous." Curtis said and I looked at him in the mirror and gave a small smile.
"You don't look bad either." I said and he smiled. He walked over to me and he pulled a small box out from behind his back.
"Curtis..." I said and he shook his head.
"Just open it, it's not what you think." Curtis said and I sighed. I opened the small black velvet box to a pair of diamond stud earrings.
"Curtis..." I said and he smiled as I went to put them on.
"They belonged to my mother. She passed away before the cold snap and she made sure I always kept these with me for me to give to the woman who would become my wife." Curtis said as I put them in. I looked back at him in the mirror.
"Curtis...we really need to talk about this just the two of us." I said once I finished putting the earrings on. I turned to him and he grabbed my wrist tightly pulling me to him, flush against him so he was in my face.
"Damnit Esme, you are mine and will be mine forever. Just get with the program already! I brought you here to be with me. You have a better life now instead of living in filth. Get with it." Curtis said and pushed me back. I stumbled into the dresser and Curtis went to leave the room as my eyes filled with tears.
"We leave in 10 minutes, make sure you look presentable." Curtis said and slammed the bedroom door shut.
