Curtis left the room so I could get changed into a pair of jeans and a cable knit sweater. I found some make-up on the dresser along with perfume and essentials I hadn't had in 10 years. I did a simple make up job as well as applying some of the perfume. I left the bedroom and met him in the sitting room and he smiled.

"Seems like you found the make-up they left as well." Curtis said and I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah, I found everything they left." I said and he looked at me. I walked over to where he was sitting and sat on the opposite end of the couch.

"I know this is all weird and new Esme and I don't want to make you feel too uncomfortable. Why don't we just talk and get to know each other." Curtis said and I nodded.

"That seems like a good idea." I said and Curtis smiled. He held out his hand and I looked at him oddly.

"Curtis Everett, nice to meet you." He said and I laughed but shook his hand.

"Esme Michaels, you met my son Colton." I said and he nodded.

"So you got on the train with your husband correct?" Curtis asked and I nodded.

"Yeah, we were just married 6 months before when we got on the train. He passed away about 3 years ago now." I said and he sighed.

"I'm sorry about that." Curtis said and I smiled.

"Thank you. So, who did you come on the train with?" I asked.

"Well that's a little more complicated." Curtis said and I looked at her.

"Why? You come on with a girlfriend or something?" I asked and we both laughed. He got up pouring us both a glass of whiskey from the bar cart in the corner of the room. Once he got back he handed me the glass, I looked at the liquid in the glass.

"To answer your question, no, no girlfriend. I was supposed to be back with you in the tail end of the train. I had a friend and his family who were able to pay enough to get on the front. Well a family member of theirs passed away before the train and they gave me the ticket as we all waited. I got lucky." Curtis said and I took a sip from the glass.

"Very..." I said and he sighed.

"Listen, I don't pretend to know what you or anyone else back there went through and I never will. I just want you to know I want to give you and Colt a better life." Curtis said.

"Why me Curtis? Why did you want me?" I asked and he sighed.

"I just see something in you. I can't explain it. It's just I look at you and I see calm, I see light in all of this crazy world." Curtis said and I just sighed.

"Curtis, I know Mason said there is a marriage in this and I just don't know how soon she is talking. I know there isn't a lot of time and things are rushed but I dated Lance, my old husband, for 2 years before he even proposed." I said and Curtis sighed.

"Marriage will be endgame here Esme, you need to understand that. An endgame that is sooner rather than later." Curtis said and I looked at him confused.

"Curtis, are you saying like a week from now I have to decide if we are getting married?" I asked and he sighed but nodded.

"No! Curtis, that's insane!" I said standing up and going into the bedroom and grabbing my bag. Curtis walked in to see me packing up what I came with.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Curtis asked.

"Curtis I did not know marriage would be so soon. When I came with you I thought we would get a chance to know each other before we even made a choice like that. I think it was a mistake for Colt and I to come here." I said and went to walk out of the room to get Colt but Curtis blocked my way out.

"Esme stop for a second!" Curtis said and backed me into the bedroom and shut the door.

"Curtis..." I said and for the first time I was scared of the look in his eyes. I didn't know what was going to happen.

"Listen to me...now...our marriage will happen, you will be my wife and we will be each other's spouse. We will have the rest of our lives to get to know each other and that's all we need. That's how marriages on the front of the train work." Curtis explained and I just shook my head.

"I want to marry someone I love, at least someone I like and can tolerate." I said.

"You will learn how it is here in time." Curtis said. "Now I'm going to get us some food. Anything special you want?" Curtis asked and I shook my head slightly.

"Fine, I'll surprise you." Curtis said and left the room and his space all together. I walked out of the bedroom and walked to Colt's new room and found him playing with some cars and I smiled.

"Mom, is Curtis my new dad?" Colt asked and I sat on his bed.

"Hey come here." I said and he crawled up to my lap and I sighed.

"Curtis and I have somethings to figure out but right now you just call him Curtis, okay?" I asked and he nodded. I kissed the side of his head and held on to him. He was all I had and now I was expected to live this new life with a man I didn't know and get married to him by next week. What was happening?
