I woke up the next morning to empty bed and Curtis' side was cold, he had been awake for a while. I walked out and I went to Colt's room to find him playing.
"Good morning mommy." He said smiling.
"Good morning baby. Did you get breakfast?" I asked and he nodded.
"Curtis fed me...cer...cear..."
"Cereal?" I asked and he nodded. I smiled.
"It was so good! He said it had something called marshmallow's in it" He exclaimed. I smiled and nodded.
"Do you know where Curtis is?" I asked and he shook his head.
"Okay well I'm going to go get dressed and then do you want to go explore the front of the train with me?" I asked.
"Are we allowed?" Colt asked and I nodded.
"Of course sweetie. We live up here for now." I said. I left his room and walked into my and Curtis's room to get changed. As I was putting on some make up I saw a pass sitting on top of the dresser and I knew it was the door pass. I left a note on the counter for Curtis that we were out, went to Colt's room, extended my hand to him that he took and we left the room. We started walking back on the train and I made sure to nod at whoever nodded and say hello. I was walking and saw a bunch of children together and Colt looked at me as they walked into a room.
"Mommy! Look!" Colt said. I realized since we had been in the front of the train we hadn't seen any other children. The lady with all the children looked at Colt and I.
"Oh you must be our new tail enders!" She exclaimed as we walked closer.
"Or Esme and Colton." I said and she smiled.
"Of course." She said.
"Can I ask what this is?" I asked.
"It's the school room. We usually get all the children when they get to be about 5 and start teaching them." She said and I looked down at Colt.
"Do you have room for one more?" I asked and she smiled with a nod.
"Of course we do. We are just starting for the day. Why don't you come in Colt and we will get you all set up." She said and I looked down as Colt as he squeezed my hand, nervous.
"Go ahead buddy. We should start this now." I said and I leaned down kissing his cheek.
"We will be done here by 2. Should I release him to only you or can Curtis be involved too?" The teacher asked and I sighed.
"Just me for now please." I said and she smiled. She held out her hand and Colt took it.
"See you soon buddy." I said and they walked into the room and she shut the door.
I sighed and kept walking the length of the train. I knew I needed to turn back but when Curtis took us up front he rushed me through most of the train cars. As I was walking myself I got time to explore the cars. I got to the car finally with all the windows and I stopped to look out. The world looks so different, I hadn't seen much of it once the cold and snow hit, I had no clue what it would look like but this wasn't what I pictured. I took a deep breath and kept walking the train. Finally I made it the final door, the door I got to come out of, the life I was saved from. I scanned the keycard and the door opened. Everyone looked at me and I gave a small smile. Tanya was standing there with Timmy.
"Esme?!" She shrieked and I smiled as she ran up to me and hugged me and then I hugged Timmy.
"Are they sending you back?" Tanya asked and I shook my head.
"Can we talk? Back at your bunk?" I asked and she nodded as we walked back to her bunk. We sat down and I sat in my old bunk that was still empty and I sighed.
"What's wrong sweetie?" Tanya asked.
"Well a lot actually." I said. "I have to marry Curtis in 2 weeks." I said and Tanya's mouth dropped open.
"And if you don't?" Tanya asked and I sighed.
"Well I get sent back here but they keep Colt up front." I said as my eyes filled with tears.
"What?! No!" She said and I nodded.
"Yeah and I'm terrified. I mean I didn't even get permission to be here now. I just needed to see you. I needed to get your opinion." I said.
"Sweetie, it is dangerous for you to be back here. Where is Colt?" Tanya asked.
"They have a school class for kids his age, I figured Curtis would want him in there so I sent him to the class." I said and Tanya nodded.
"So what are you going to do?" Tanya asked.
"I mean I think I have to marry him right? I don't want to lose Colt and if I don't marry Curtis I lose Colt for sure." I explained.
"But a forced life, a forced marriage..." Tanya said and I groaned.
"I know but I don't really have a choice. Until I am married to him, I don't have a say in anything. I don't know if I will once we are married but I will see what I can do." I said and Tanya took my hand.
"I never thought I would say this but you need to marry that man. Keep you family together, get your life better. Do this for you and Colt. Who knows you may eventually fall in love with Curtis..." Tanya said and I shrugged.
"So accept to marry him?" I asked.
"Accept to marry him." Tanya said. Before we could continue our conversation we heard the door open and I saw them bringing in the protein blocks. I saw the one guard was Curtis.
"Fuck!" I groaned
"Get in the bunk and stay there. They can't see you if your hiding until they leave." Tanya said and I laid in the bunk.
"LINE UP!" Curtis yelled. I laid in the bunk.
"Everett...do bunk checks." The one guard said and I heard Curtis come walking down the aisle by the bunks, my heart started racing. I knew he would find me so I just stood up from the bunk as he wasn't looking and when he looked back he saw me standing there.
"Esme?! What the fuck?!" He asked grabbing my upper arm pulling me flush against him.
"I'm sorry Curtis, I wanted to come see Tanya...I missed her." I said and he growled.
"And Colt? He here too?" Curtis asked.
"No, he's in school." I said and I saw Curtis smirked slightly but then his lips were set in a hard line again.
"You stole my keycard..." He said and I sighed handing it back to him. "Let's go." Curtis said not letting go of my arm and pulling me to the front of the train car.
"I have to go." Curtis said to the other guard who saw me.
"Get that bitch in line Curtis!" The one guard yelled as we left. Curtis practically pulled me through all train cars until we got back to our room and he slammed the door shut. He threw me against the door and caged me in.
"Why must you constantly defy me?! You went back after being here. Do you see what I pulled you out of! What I'm trying to keep you from?! Why must you constantly fucking fight me?!" Curtis yelled and I got tears in my eyes. He did let up and stayed closed to my face.
"I want to marry you." I said breaking the tension. He stayed closed to my face, still caging me in.
"What?" He asked.
"I want to marry you...I'm ready to marry you Curtis." I said He just looked at me in shock. Took a hand from caging me in and gripped my chin.
"You're serious?" He asked.
"Yes." I said. Before I knew what was happened Curtis' lips were on mine and he was kissing me. This was our first kiss. Our lips seems to fit together perfectly. He moved his hand from my chin to my cheek and he cradled my face. Once we broke apart he looked in my eyes.
"No more trips without me." Curtis is and I nodded. "Let's go tell Mason the good news." Curtis said taking my hand as we left our room.
