I was crouching behind a bush outside the school in the dark. After sneaking out of the house and saying my last goodbyes to my not family while they slept. Then I ran all the way to school.
I looked at the sky, the sun was setting and the sky was turning dark blue so it was 5:00 sharp. It was go time. I looked back in my bag, making sure I had everything. Ringer, flashlight, my adoption form, my wand, and there was nothing else. I didn’t take much from home, it reminded me too much of my not family.
Anyway at 5:00 all the protection magic that protects the school runs out just for 10 minutes, then the guards come back and put the magic back. Every spell can be only held for so long, a person who cast that spell has to have full concentration when they cast it and eventually the concentration they used to cast the spell runs out.
I only had 10 minutes. Was I really going to do this? Well no turning back now. I opened the gate as quickly and quietly as I could. But it still made a tiny squeak. I froze waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. I ran all the way across the school to get to the storage room where they keep the portal rays. In the dark it looked like a room where they keep dead bodies. It was like a small shed, the shadows hid me and the storage room well. But I knew this place like the back of my hand. Going here for a year does that to you.
When I got there the door was locked, and by the looks of it was locked by magic. Any minute now it should run out and then I can use my wand to do a simple unlocking spell. I heard a little ding, that told me that the magic ran out. I took out my wand and said amorea.” The door clicked and it opened to a little room that held all sorts of things. Some things I did not recognize and other things I did. I walked in and started trying to find what I wanted.
Every sound made me jump and look up, every minute that passed by felt like an hour. It was hard trying to find stuff in the dark, I didn’t dare use a flashlight in fear of someone seeing me.
Finally I saw the glistening black rock the size of my palm sitting on a self labeled “portal rays”. I barely had time to look at them and took one, stuffing it in my bag. I ran back outside, locking the door behind me so that the guards knew that I did not come here.
I heard footsteps up the hallway, I knew my time was up. As quickly and quietly as I could I ran to the back door. As I ran I heard more and more footsteps. Could they know I was here? Were they looking for me? Or did they just come to get the magic back on?
I stopped. listening for anything. Around the corner I saw flashlight beams walking their way to me. My heart started beating fast out of control. After all this work I couldn’t go back. I had to get there. I turned around and ran. Hoping against hope that they couldn’t hear me.
I finally got to the back door and opened it. I think I was safe there, I couldn’t go back to my not house. So I had to do it here. I pulled out the glistening rock even though it was pitch black now. I knew how to do this, right? I saw it being done in class. I can do this.
I put both hands on the rock and closed my eyes. I concentrated on one of the lost worlds I saw in my textbook. I saw the green trees and the houses and the weird clothes they were wearing, the bench that the person was sitting at, the valley with what they call a town. I pictured so hard that I could actually believe that I was there right now. Then a feeling started to form from my fingers, like a tingle of warmth. It was spending from my fingers to my body and out shooting a ray of purple light in the space creating a portal.
There was a force so strong that it knocked me off my feet, making me fall to the ground on my butt.
I did it! I looked into the space that was before empty now with a black hole pulling me in. The purple flash of light was sure to draw people's attention, any minute now people would be swarming this place.
I took one last look at the Enchanted Lands. The school, the hills in the distance, the forest, my group of houses, I was leaving them all behind. I had to admit, some things I was going to miss, Wren’s face flashed in my mind, then Lea’s, and mom’s, and dad’s. I was really going to leave them. I need to find out the truth and see who I am.
I started to step into the portal but before I finished stepping in I saw a shadow behind a tree. He seemed like he was watching me, he was tall and I couldn’t see his face that well in the dark. And before I knew it I was falling toward the lost worlds.
