I took a look at Lily, wondering why she was so distracted. After history she kept on looking out the window that someone was going to jump out into the school and attack her.
“Hey, you ok?” I asked her.
“Ya, fine”
“It’s just you look really distracted, you keep on looking at the window.”
She signed, but didn’t say anything.
“You can trust us, we can keep your secret if you have one.” said Emmet, sitting next to Lily.
“It might be better to say it to get it off your chest,” Alice said.
Her face was scrunched up like she was thinking. She sighed again. “Fine, I thought I saw something out the window.”
“Like what?” I asked.
She turned away and mumbled “you wouldn’t understand.”
“Try us.” said Emmet, while he reached to touch her hand but thought better and pulled back.
Lily didn’t seem to notice. She looked around quickly and said “I will tell you later.”
I get why. She might have to tell us something that she didn’t want anyone else to hear. And it looked like some people were eavesdropping.
“After school?” Alice asked.
“Sure.”
“Meet at the hideout?,” I offered.
“Sure that sounds great.” Lily said.****
Later that day Alice, Emmet, Lily and I were sitting around in a circle in the hideout. I thought Lily might be more comfortable here with no one here and there was just us. But she seemed like she was stalling asking about our day and looking around the hideout like everything was fantastic. I guess it might be for her but could she tell us what had been brothing her already? I didn’t want to come off rude but I could not wait anymore.
“Ok, tell us what is bothering you. Stop stalling.” I said a little firmly. “If you are ready.” I added.
“You can trust us with anything.” Emmet said.
Everyone looked at Lily, it reminded me of kindergarten when everyone was looking at the teacher waiting to hear a story. Lily took a deep breath and started to tell her story.****POV Lily
Telling them my story was very hard for me. I didn’t know where to begin. I didn’t even know if I could trust them. But they were all very nice to me and they made me feel like I belonged. If This is what it felt like to have a friend, it felt good. But I was afraid. Not afraid of making friends but afraid of them backstabbing me. Maybe after I tell them my story they wouldn’t want to be my friend any more. Once they heard of the weird girl that grew up in a weird world that could do weird things and seen weird things they probably didn’t want to be friends with me anymore. Was it enough to risk it? Losing my newfound friends. But they really did want to know. I should probably tell them so that they knew they were making friends with a freak.
I told them that I was from a different world that had magic and that I found out that I belonged in their world and how I came here. Finally I told them what I saw through the window and that it might have been people from my land where I grew up.
Their expressions were just what I expected. First they all laughed like it was a big joke, then they saw my face and knew I was serious.
Now their expressions were in shock. It was dead silence, and no one wanted to break it. I could hear them breathing hard. I hoped they could not hear my pounding heart.
“So….” I said breaking the silence.
Amy was the first to get out of the shock and cover me in a giant hug.
“I am so sorry this happened to you.” Amy said.
“Wait, is this even real?” Asked Alice.
“Of course it is.” Said Emmet, “look at her,” said Emmet pointing to me.
I could’ve guessed what I looked like, shaken, scared, afraid. Would they still be my friend?
“We promised that we would trust you,” Amy said, looking at Alice, “and we will.”
“Thank you.” I mumbled.
“No, I am sorry but I still can’t believe this is real.” Said Alice, “can you prove it?”
“Alice…” said Emmet, giving her a glare that meant “knock it off.”
“No, it’s fine. She deserves to doubt my claim.”
“Can I talk to Emmet and Alice for a minute, Lily?” Asked Amy.
“Ya.” I said, they of course wanted to talk about this.
They moved outside of the hideout leaving me behind in the darkness. I was tempted to try to eavesdrop on them but it would be impossible since there was a wall between us and plus it was their private conversation. 452 seconds before they came back. Way too long for my taste. I was starting to wonder if they left. Amy and Emmet looked like they were relieved that the talk was over about me. Alice was shooting daggers at me with her eyes. It seemed like she was the one that didn’t trust me.
“Is everything okay?” I asked
“Everything is fine.” Alice said, through gritted teeth. She was trying to hide it but I still found the venom in her tone.
Amy elbowed Alice and said in a much lighter tone, “everything is fine.”
Emmet moved much closer to me and grabbed my hand hysterically. Feeling his warm hand I swear I felt my cheeks heat up.
He looked at me with his warm sea green eyes filled with pity, and sorrow, but also determination “We will always stand by you, I promise. Through all the ups and downs, no matter what happens.” Emmet said sweetly.
Wow, did he just say that to me? Tears sprang to my eyes. Happy tears. I was trying to blink them back fast. A warm feeling was creeping up on me. My heart fluttered. What was this? Is it… can it be… this feeling… was a feeling I have never felt ever before. Was it friendship? No, it was more than that.
Everyone was looking at me and I realized that I was supposed to say something.
I cleared my throat. “That was one of the sweetest things anyone has said to me.” I said.
“Well I think someone should have said something sweeter than that. You deserve that.”
My face was more red than a tomato. Did he just say that I deserve something sweet? Does he actually care about me? At the corner of my eye I saw Amy and Alice looking at each other that looked like it meant oooooo, this is getting interesting.
“Thank you.” I said, not trusting myself to say more.
I realized that Emmet’s hands were still in mine. I pulled back my hand gently, not wanting to set the wrong impression.
“Well,” Amy said. Breaking the awkward silence. “Lily, you could stay at my house.”
“Oh, I just realized that I need a place to stay. But I can figure something out.”
I really did want to stay over but Amy has already been so kind to me. I don’t want to bother her anymore.
“No, I instinct. I promise it's going to be a fun sleepover.” She says with excitement.
I bit my lip thinking hard. I don’t have anywhere to stay. These people are my only friends. If I don’t stay over I might not see them ever again. Finally I came to a conclusion.
“Ok, I guess I can stay over. I don’t know how to thank you.” I said with a smile on my face. And I really meant it.
“You can start by coming over and getting some rest. The rest we can figure out in the morning.”A/N: Emmet and Alice 🥰
