I saw ma waiting for us when all of us returned home from Bombay.
"Maa......" I bent down to seek her blessings "How are you? Such a big surprise"
Sumati- My child I reached here just an hour ago...bless you, congratulations on becoming the first female barrister of both the villages...finally you proved you and your pati babu's dream ambition.
"Maa" My eyes grew a little wider as I replied "I think you should better take some rest as you travelled a long distance."
Sumati- No beta...I am perfectly fine....so when are you returning to your husband? its been a decade now since you came here, do you know how your Pati Babu lived without you all these years.
"Ma, I handed him our separation papers on my convocation eve" I replied with a heavy sigh "I am expecting him to sign that and return it to me, so our namesake marriage is dissolved legally"
Sumati (shocked)- What? Why do you want to end the marriage? Are you in your senses? You will again be called an 'Abandoned woman' for your foolishness. Did you forget what you had to undergo in village and then at Heera Mandi? The people were about to burn you had I not stepped in to protect you.
"Well, there's a slight correction to your "Abandon" I replied smiling "I have filed for fresh legal separation with him which was only an official declaration because we got separated 10 yrs ago, the reason why he married Manorama rightfully. Although paper-wise, i stayed his wife untill the next few months when the child marriage law came into force pronouncing our marriage as null and void, but I had lost the position of a wife with the application, unofficially long before. So with the filing of his application, I was technically displaced from the wife's position in his eyes right away.
