the girls, Lewis, and I sit in the cafe and watch a short film with everyone. the girls wanted to get me out of the house. Wilfred says "Big boots to fill by Lewis Mccartney, the winning entry from last year's junior filmmaker's competition." Emma says "if we're gonna win this thing, we have got to be aware of the rules." Ricki says "forget the rules. it's a short film contest. we make a short film. how hard can it be?" Cleo explains "last year they rejected an entry because it was seven seconds over 3 minutes." Wilfred yells "okay, filmmakers, this year's theme is heroes. and courtesy of Zane's father, the very generous and wealthy, Dr. Harrison Bennett, this year's prize money has doubled." the girls make happy comments. I ignore everything else and lay my head on the table. Lewis shakes me and asks "you okay, Madison?" I lift my head from the table and nod my head quietly. Ricki goes and grabs a rule book and she and Zane make snarky remarks at each other. she asks "Why does Zane's dad get to judge?" Emma quips "probably because he's putting in all the money." Cleo adds "maybe because he's a genuine hero too. look." and she points to the windsurfer hanging on the wall with his name on it. Emma explains "that's the windsurfer Harrison Bennett rode to mako island. all the way around and back in record time, right Zane?" he says "yeah, whatever. old news." Emma says "the records stood for 20 years." Zane says "yeah, my dad, big hero, blah, blah, blah, blah." Ricki says "I had no idea your dad was a hero! you must've been a tremendous disappointment to him." he walks away and I say "well, not everyone has amazing fathers!" and I storm out. Ricki yells "Madison! wait!" but I just keep walking. As I'm walking my phone goes off. I look at the Caller I.D and press ignore.
I walk along the beach when I hear Cleo come up. she says "hey." I say "I'll apologize to Ricki and Emma later." Cleo says "that's not why I'm here." I say "oh, sorry." she says "it's fine." we walk in silence for a few minutes till she breaks it by saying "you know Ricki didn't mean what she said." I say "I know. it's just with everything with my dad, I'm a little overly sensitive right now." Cleo says "for what it's worth, I'm sorry." I shrug and say "not your fault. but thank you." I hug her. she asks "so, how many amazing songs have come out of this thing with your dad?" I smile and say "4 and a half." Cleo laughs and says "you should ask Wilfred if you can sing at the juicenet for entertainment. it would bring in more customers for him and start getting your name out there." I sigh and say "I don't know, Cleo. I'm not sure I'm ready." she says "well, whenever you are the girls, Lewis and I will always have your back." I smile and say "well, we should get back to the girls. you have to help them shoot a short film while I eat all of Emma's food." she laughs and we head to Emma's. Right outside Emma's my phone goes off again. I look at the Caller I.D and press ignore again. I mutter "take a hint."
I sit and watch Emma, Lewis, and the girls film Emma's mother. this is got to be the most boring short film ever. Emma's mother finally needed a break. Rikki says "while you're sorting that stuff out. I'll go do some camera tests. different lighting and backgrounds and stuff. Lewis, Madison?" I nod and follow her out and Lewis follows us. she tells me her plan to film sharks. as we walk to the docks Lewis asks "I still don't understand why you need me?" Ricki says "simple." she opens a bag to a huge device. Lewis says "you want to shoot underwater?" Ricki says "yep. north side of Mako island." Lewis says "Ricki! have you any idea how many sharks are out there?" Ricki says "that's the idea. and that's also why Madison is here. for some reason, her mermaid powers are stronger than me and the girls. so, having her there will protect us from the sharks. besides., sharks are a winning formula on film." Lewis asks "you want to film them?" she says "heroes of the deep. that's my idea." I say "better than Emma's 'my mother' idea." Ricki says "think about it. we can get footage that no one else can get. it'll be great! come on, face it, we're never gonna win the competition with Emma's idea. just think of it as a backup plan." he says "no." she questions "no?" he states more firmly "No!" then walks away. she sighs and says "no." I say "come on, let's go anyway." she nods and before we take off underwater to film the sharks, I get another call. I look at the Caller I.D and consider answering. Ricki asks "are you gonna answer that?" I shake my head and press ignore while saying "no. It's no one important." And we jump into the water.
Ricki is filming while I'm helping keep the sharks happy. I grab a fish and one of the sharks gently eats it from my hand and swims against me. I giggle slightly. Ricki laughs. after a few hours of filming, Ricki points up. I head up to the surface with her. she says "I got to go help Emma with her short film." I say "I'm gonna stay here a little longer. meet up later, maybe." she nods and heads out. I go back down and hang out with the sharks and dolphins and fish a little longer.
I sit at home in my room. the lights off but not sleeping. I get ANOTHER call from him. I continue to ignore him though. I pick up the picture of me and my dad. I sit looking at it and start to cry. then I get angry and throw it across the room shattering the glass. I scream and start to destroy everything that relates back to my father. Mom was working a night shift tonight so Roman and Dallas run in. Roman grabs me stopping me from breaking anything else. I scream and cry in his grip. Roman says "Madison! Madison! relax." I cry harder. after a while, they lay me on my bed and I lay quietly. Roman and Dallas start to clean up. mom walks in and asks "what happened?" Roman says "she started breaking things and crying. we stopped her and put her to bed." my mom sighs and says "okay." I say in a hoarse voice "get rid of it." my mom sits down and pushes my hair from my face and asks "what's that, honey?" I say "anything having to do with him. get rid of it. all of it." she asks "you sure?" I nod and silently sob. mom says "okay, boys. let's start packing things up." Dallas says "I'll go get a box." and he runs away. Roman hugs me and says "sorry, Madison." I stay silent as I sob. as they clean I cry myself to sleep.

the next day, Ricki and I head out to film more of the sharks. I helped guided most of the sharks while Ricki filmed the ones I didn't. after getting tons of footage we go up to the surface and hear Zane yell "help! save me! Help! Please! somebody help me!" Ricki and I look at each other. I say "boil the water it'll scare the sharks. which I will guide away from Zane." she says "okay." we both go and she starts to boil the water to scare the sharks. I start to guide them far away from Zane. once they go away Ricki swims away. I smile up at Zane then take off after her. once we get to the surface she says "that was smart thinking." I say "thanks. now let's get out of here." Ricki goes back to Emma's and I head to the café to do some more writing. I sit down and start to continue to write about my crap dad who abandoned me. then my phone goes off. I check it and see it's my dad for the billionth time. I answer and say "call me again and I will tell mom to call the lawyers!" and I hang up.

a few days later, it's the night of the short films. so, we are all sitting watching the short films. they start to show Lewis's and it's Zane screaming for help from the shark but Lewis is making fun of him. He replaced the shark with a cartoon goldfish. I get annoyed. I look to Lewis and ask "do you actually think that's funny?" Lewis smugly says "oh, I think the audience is the best, uh, judge, Madison." I say "Ricki and I were there, Lewis. who do you think scared away the sharks that were about to use him as a personal chew toy? Zane wasn't acting." Lewis looks guilty and I just look pissed. everyone but Zane, Lewis, Rikki, and I clap. Wilfred says "so, congratulations to you all for a fantastic effort. it's time to announce our winners. and the winner is...for the second year in a row, a wonderful comedy, Lewis McCartney, "Scared of Water." Lewis goes to get his prize. I shake my head beyond annoyed at him. I walk out.

A little while later, I decide to go for a walk by the docks. I see Zane with his best actor award. I decide to go talk to him. I say "you did well." he looks at me. he asks "acting you mean?" I shake my head and say "No. the whole windsurfing around Mako thing, and everything else. it took guts. something most don't have." he smiles at me. he says "you're the only one who thinks so." I give him a small smile but stay quiet. I then walk away leaving him to his thoughts and me to my own.
