Six months had passed since the upheaval of my family life, since the fracture of our once-unified unit. The wounds were still fresh, the pain lingering like an unwelcome guest in our home.It had been a tumultuous time since Dad left. London, my mom, had been doing her best to hold our family together, but the strain was evident in the lines etched upon her face, in the weariness that weighed down her spirit.
Roman, my steadfast older brother, had taken on the role of protector, shielding us from the full brunt of our family's turmoil. At sixteen, he bore the weight of responsibility with a stoic resolve, but beneath his calm exterior, I could sense the turmoil brewing, the conflict between his loyalty to Mom and his desire to forge a relationship with Dad.
And then there was Dallas, my sweet seven-year-old brother, blissfully unaware of the complexities of our family dynamics. To him, Dad's return was cause for celebration, a chance to be reunited with the father he adored.
But for me, Madison, the middle child at fifteen, Dad's reappearance was nothing short of a betrayal. After abandoning us without a second thought, after barely putting up a fight to keep us when Mom filed for divorce, he now waltzed back into our lives, expecting us to welcome him with open arms. But I refused to play along, refused to forgive and forget so easily.
Dad had been back for a few weeks now, and with each passing day, the tension in our home seemed to mount, thickening the air with an unspoken animosity that threatened to suffocate us all.
It was against this backdrop of familial discord that the next chapter in our saga unfolded.

I sat at the kitchen table, my gaze fixed on the steaming cup of tea before me, but my mind a million miles away. The sound of voices drifted in from the living room, the murmur of conversation mingling with the faint strains of tension that hung in the air.
London and Dad were talking, their voices strained, the underlying tension palpable even from where I sat. Roman hovered nearby, his expression guarded as he tried to navigate the treacherous waters of our fractured family dynamic.
"Dallas, sweetheart, why don't you go play outside for a bit?" London's voice broke through the din, her tone gentle but tinged with weariness.
Dallas, ever the obedient child, nodded and scampered off, oblivious to the turmoil that surrounded him.
As the door closed behind him, silence descended upon the room, thick and suffocating. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, the weight of unspoken words pressing down upon me like a leaden weight.
Finally, Roman broke the silence, his voice hesitant. "Dad, can we talk?"
Dad nodded, his expression unreadable. "Of course, son. What's on your mind?"
Roman hesitated, his gaze flickering towards London before settling on Dad. "I just... I don't understand why you're doing this, Dad. Why now? After everything that's happened..."
