As I stroll along the grassy path by the shore, a blur of green zips past me, the roar of an engine filling the air.
"Seriously? Watch where you're going, you reckless fool!" I shout, irritation bubbling up within me. "A little more to the right next time, you missed me by an inch, you jerk!"
The figure skids to a stop, and with a dramatic flourish, he removes his helmet, revealing none other than Zane. "Glad to provide some entertainment!" he calls out with a smirk, his tone a mix of arrogance and charm.
Rolling my eyes, I shake my head at his audacity, but a faint grin tugs at my lips as I catch sight of him again.
"Miss me?" he quips, not bothering to pause for my response as he swiftly replaces his helmet and speeds off once more, leaving me standing there, bewildered and utterly bemused.
Emma, Rikki, and I sauntered along that same stretch of lush greenery that bordered the beach. The salty breeze tousled our hair as we exchanged the latest gossip. I couldn't help but spill about my unexpected encounter with Zane, and predictably, both Emma and Rikki responded with concern.
"He's trouble, Mads. You know that," Emma warned, her voice tinged with worry.
I waved off their apprehensions with a casual flick of my hand. "Relax, guys. Last time Zane saw us, we were just regular girls."
Emma arched an eyebrow. "And the time before that? We were mermaids, Mads. He's not going to forget that anytime soon."
Rikki nodded in agreement, her expression serious. "Hate to admit it, but Emma's got a point."
I sighed, brushing off their concerns as I tried to reassure them. "Well, then we'll just have to steer clear of water whenever he's around. Not like we hang out with him all the time anyway. It's the same drill as with everyone else."
Emma shook her head, her voice laced with unease. "Zane isn't like everyone else, Mads. When he wants something, he's relentless."
Rikki chimed in, her tone cautious. "Maybe... he still wants..."
I interrupted, frustration creeping into my voice. "Wants what, Rikki?"
Emma's gaze locked with mine, her words deliberate. "Like you, Mads. He might still want you."
Rikki's brows furrowed. "And what happens if he finds out we're mermaids? Can you trust him with that?"
I bristled at the implication, my defenses rising. "I don't need to trust him, Rikki. We're done. Finished. That's where it stands."
Emma exchanged a glance with Rikki before speaking softly. "We just thought it might be hard seeing him around again, that's all."
I forced a nonchalant shrug, ignoring the tumult of emotions swirling within me. "It won't be. I broke up with him, remember?"
