Chapter 24-Gabriel’s Story
I didn’t know if I should continue on and open the door to the attic.
I wondered if I was doing the right thing.
Would this put her in any more danger? Would this change the future like Calder had said it would? Is it possible that it might change because of what I was about to do? These were the kind of questions that ran through my mind. I didn’t believe that the Council murders and telling Gwen about me was connected in any way. So why should it matter what I was about to do?
“Gabriel?” I flinched but didn’t turn around at the sound of my name. Her voice had brought me out of my thoughts and back to the decision that I was about to make.
A few minutes before, I was certain of what I was going to tell her. I had brought her up here and now I was uncertain. Everything has a consequence but I wasn’t sure what this one might be and was afraid of what it might mean for her.
She needs to know.
I’d brought Gwen up to the attic when we were younger. It wouldn’t be the first time that she would set foot up here. We’d spent countless of hours cleaning out my family’s memoirs. Sometimes, when we played hide-n-seek, Gwen hid up here and it took me forever to find her. This time taking her up to the attic would be different. There were things that I knew now that I didn’t know back then.
I put my hand on the doorknob and turned it, opening the door. Just a few days ago Calder had been here. His presence still lingered as I walked through the door with Gwen behind my heels. The essence of him hung in the air and I saw the small line of the power he left behind. To others like me, it looked like a cloudy line with fragments cutting through it. To mortals like Gwen it was invisible but the feeling of power was there. I longed for that power to course through my veins again. I didn’t want to be weak when it was time to save Gwen. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to save her and me being here would have been for nothing.
“Gabriel what are we doing up here?” I turned around to find Gwen right behind me and almost colliding into her.
I took a step back and said, “I want to show you something.” I went to the far corner of the room to grab a role of paper that was older than I was. It was etched with gold intricate designs like the necklace I gave Gwen. There was black, curving writing on the parchment and I carefully opened it up to not damage the parchment.
Gwen turned on the light and it illuminated the whole room. It was no longer dim and I blinked a few times for my eyes to become accustomed to the light. I looked up and saw Gwen watching me with curious eyes. I tilted my head and motioned for her to come and sit with me on the sofa. I watched as she walked over to sit next to me. Dark circles had begun to form under her eyes but there was still the hint of alertness in the way she moved and she sat next to me; uncertain of what I was going to say.
“My family has been blessed with magic since the beginning of time.” I said slowly. “We are called Keepers of Time and we guard its essence. It has always been our duty to keep watch and protect what happens in the world. Time is fragile and with that said, we have to be careful of our actions to not change anything that might upset the balance of the dimensions.” I stopped and handed her the piece of parchment. “It’s my family tree dating back to 800 A.D. Everyone’s name and everyone’s ability is recorded and you’ll find mine and my sister’s listed at the end.” I leaned into her and waited for the realization to surface in her mind.
