Chapter 42-Winter to Spring

After the day of seeing my father, I went into overdrive.

By overdrive I mean that I was constantly training with Gabriel.  I needed to be ready and prepared for whatever lied ahead.  Training also served as a getaway for my thoughts about my father, Anne, and their wedding.

The wedding was set for November.

I closed my eyes and breathed in and out, concentrating on Gabriel’s movements in front of me.  He was moving around me, slowly in a circle, his footsteps light on the mat, his breath close to my ear as he stopped pacing.

“Do you notice something different?”  He asked.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.  I couldn’t hear anything besides my beating heart and Gabriel’s breathing in my ears.  The two were overwhelming and distracting.  “No, I’m not as tuned into nature as you are, Gabe.”  I said.  “I don’t have super hearing or-”

“Just listen.”  He said sternly.

I bit my lip.  Today was one of those days where Gabriel wasn’t hearing any of my complaining-not that I complained a lot or anything.  He was just not in the mood.  I’ve noticed that every time we trained Gabriel changed into a whole different person.  He was stern, demanding, and cold.  Sometimes, deep in my gut, I hated him.  Hate is a strong word…strongly dislike at the moment sounds about right, I thought.  There were times when Gabriel’s harsh words would cut through my heart and he’ll see the flash of hurt in my eyes and back off, turning into the sweet and caring guy that I love.

“I am listening but you breathing down my neck isn’t helping.”

I heard him stop pacing and felt him in front of me.  “What if your captured and tied down like this?”  He asked.  “What are you going to do?”

I shrugged.

“You have to listen.  You have to block out everything that is nonessential to your escape.  You have to listen to your surroundings to figure out where you are and who your kidnappers are.”  I opened my mouth to say something but Gabriel quickly silenced me, putting his finger to my lips.  “You have to calculate possible escape routes judging by that place where you are.”

“This is pointless.”  I muttered.  “I don’t have acute hearing like you do.  The only thing I can hear is my lousy heart beating in my ears.”

“Well, if you stop complaining maybe we can get somewhere today.”  He mumbled.  His voice was agitated and if my eyes were open I bet he was running a hand through his hair.

I lost my temper and before I knew what I was doing I punched Gabe in the face.

******

She had completely caught me off guard with that stunt she pulled.  She opened her eyes at the moment where I had momentarily lost my balance.  My face must have been surprised-it was exactly what I felt-because Gwen’s eyes widened in disbelief.  Her punch hadn’t harmed me; sure it hurt but only for a second.

I arched my left eyebrow and opened my arms to invite her to show me what I’ve been teaching her.  Gwen walked towards me, her fists balled beside her.  Her mouth was clenched in anger and there was real fury behind her clear brown eyes.  She brought her right fist up to punch me in the stomach…
