KNOWING THAT A lot of officers had just been killed by the dalek, diana looked back at the computer, typing furiously. callisto was standing beside the doctor, watching the screen from over diana's head. van statten was stood straight now, still watching the screen with wide eyes.
"that's us, right below the surface. that's the cage and that's the dalek." diana explained, pointing at the different locations in the building.
"this museum of yours, have you got any alien weapons?" the doctor asked.
"lots of them. the trouble is, the dalek's between us and them." diana informed.
"we've gotta keep that thing alive. we could just seal the entire vault, trap it down there." van statten suggested and callisto rolled her eyes.
"leaving everyone trapped with it? rose is down there. i won't let that happen." the doctor stated firmly. "have you got that? it's gotta go through this area. what's that?"
"weapons testing." diana answered.
"give guns to the technicians, the lawyers, anyone. everyone. only then have you got a chance of killing it." the doctor said.
"have they really?" callisto asked, her voice quiet by his ear again. "personally, i've never fought the dalek race, but bullets created by mankind against an advanced alien creature with a laser for a hand... who'd realistically win that?"
the doctor looked down at her, "they've just gotta try. for now, at least." he sat down at the computer.
"i though you were the greta expert, doctor." van statten spoke up after a moment of silence. "if you're so impressive, then why not just reason with this dalek? it must be willing to negotiate. there must be something it needs. everything needs somethin'."
"what's the nearest town?" the doctor asked, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"salt lake city." van statten replied.
"population?" the doctor requested.
"1 million."
"all of them, dead. if the dalek gets out it'll murder every living creature. that's all it needs." the doctor explained.
"but why would it do that?" van statten demanded in a yell.
"because it honestly believes they should die. human beings are different and anything different is wrong. it's the ultimate in racial cleansing and you, van statten, have let it loose!"
"the dalek's surrounded by a force field. the bullets'll be melted before they can hit home but it's not indestructible. if you concentrate your fire, you might get through." the doctor told the officers who were waiting to shoot at the dalek. "aim for the dome. the head, the eyepiece. that's the weak spot."
