THE TIME TRAVELLERS had found an old, bashed up warehouse to law low in. despite being the most wanted people in the united kingdom, they didn't say no the martha when she suggested she go and grab some chips for tea. after about 20 minutes, she walked back into the warehouse with a warm plastic bag in hand.

"how was it?" jack asked, standing by the entrance to the wide room, both the doctor and callisto seated in front of the laptop, but she was taking little notice of it now she could smell chips.

"i don't think anyone saw me. anything new?" martha inquired, stopping in front of jack, shoving a hand into the bag to get his food.

"i got this tuned into the government wave lengths, so we can follow what saxon's doing." jack explained, pointing to his watch.

"yeah, i meant about my family." martha corrected firmly.

"still says your family have been taken for questioning." callisto said, offering martha a small sympathetic smile.

"tell you what, though, no mention of leo." the doctor added on a happier note and martha smiled, handing him and callisto their chips.

"he's not as daft as he looks." she grinned and the doctor nodded. "i'm talking about my brother on the run, how did this happen?"

"nice chips." jack hummed, taking a seat beside callisto.

"actually, they're not bad." the doctor agreed, popping another into his mouth.

"fuck me." callisto dramatically groaned in approval, having decided that chip shop chips drowned in salt and vinegar could solve all her problems.

"take me out to dinner first." jack joked, leaning back comfortably, winking at callisto who smirked.

"i'm right here." the doctor scoffed.

"who said you weren't invited?" callisto replied easily, martha laughing at the doctor's silent, wide-eyed response.

the momentarily happy atmosphere disappeared after a moment and jack looked between martha and callisto before settling back on a serious topic, "so, doctor, who is he? how come the ancient society of time lords created a psychopath?"

"and what is he to you? like, a colleague, or...?" martha guessed, trailing off for him to answer.

"friends, at first." the doctor replied.

"thought you were gonna say he was your secret brother or something." martha scoffed a chuckle and the other three looked at her as if she'd grown a second head.

"you've been watching too much tv." the doctor mused.

"but all the legends of gallifrey, made it sound so perfect." jack sighed.

"well, perfect to look at, maybe. and it was, it was beautiful. they used to call it the shining world of the seven systems," the doctor remembered, leaning back in his chair, "and on the continent of wild endeavour, in the mountains of solace and solitude, there stood the citadel of the time lords, the oldest and most mighty race in the universe, looking down on the galaxies below. sworn never to interfere. only the watch. children of gallifrey are taken from their families at the age of eight, to enter the academy. some say that's where it all began, when he was a child. that's when the master saw eternity. as a novice, he was taken for initiation. he stood in front of the untempered schism - it's a gap in the fabric of reality, through which could be seen the whole of the vortex. you stand there, eight years old, staring at the raw power of time and space, just a child. some would be inspired, some would run away, and some would go mad."
