CATHICA LOOKED AROUND the room for people nervously as the doctor moved his sonic screwdriver around a panel in the wall of the space station. rose and callisto watched over his shoulders, the green woman interested in how the screwdriver worked.
"we're so gonna get in trouble." cathica muttered, turning to the trio. "we're not allowed to touch the mainframe, we'll get told off!"
"rose, tell her to button it." the doctor said.
"you can't vandalise the place, someone's gonna notice!" cathica continued as the doctor yanked off the panel in the wall to the mainframe. "this is nothing to do with me, i'm going back to work."
"go on then, see ya!" the doctor replied.
"i can't just leave you, can i?" cathica carried on, undecided.
"yes, you can!" callisto responded, moving wires out of the way, the doctor stood in the wall now, his sonic screwdriver reading the mainframe.
"if you wanna be useful, get 'em to turn the heating down." rose ordered. "it's boiling. what's wrong with this place? can't they do something about it?"
"oh, i don't know, we keep asking. something to do with the turbines." cathica answered.
"something to do with the turbines." the doctor mimicked, mockingly.
"well, i don't know!" cathica exclaimed.
the doctor turned to her, "exactly! i give up on you, cathica. now, rose, look at rose, rose is asking the right kinda questions."
"ah, thank you." rose smiled.
"why is it so hot?" the doctor repeated
"one minute you're worried about the empire and the next minute it's the central heating!" cathica threw her hands up.
"never underestimate plumbing." the doctor replied. "plumbing's very important." he yanked out some wires carelessly and cathica looked pained, turning her back to
them. he pulled a small tablet-looking object out, "here we go: satellite 5. pipes and plumbing. look at the layout.""this is ridiculous." cathica muttered, holding the tablet in her hands as the doctor stepped out of the wall. "you've got access to the computer's core. you could look at the archives, the news, the stock exchange... and you're looking at pipes."
"but there's something wrong." the doctor stated.
"i suppose." cathica agreed.
"why?" rose asked. "what is it?"
"the ventilation system. cooling ducts, ice filters. all working flat out. channeling massive amounts of heat down." cathica looked up.
"all the way from the top." the doctor said.
