MARTHA FLOATED CLOSER and closer to the hot, coiling waves of the sun, palms slapping lightly against the small, glass window. the doctor and callisto watched as if suddenly helpless, minds blank for a short moment of time. a thought that martha might die and they weren't able to save her blared in callisto's brain.

"the magnetic lock on the outside, that needs to be amplified. think we could do it without becoming icarus?" callisto muttered.

"i'll boost the lock, you hold onto me?" the doctor asked.

"piece of piss." callisto shrugged, but she knew it would be anything but.

the doctor pressed the button to turn on the communication device beside them, "scannell, i need two space suits in area 17 now."

"what for?" scannell asked.

"just get down here!" the doctor shouted, moving back to look out of the window.

moments later, scannell ran into area 17, two spacesuits thrown over his shoulders and two helmets in his hands. the aliens didn't waste much time, starting to pull on the orange material, explaining that they were going to bring martha and riley back, but the only way was to open the airlock and use the control pad outside.

"i can't let you do this." scannell stated.

"you're wasting your breath, scannell, you're not gonna stop us." the doctor said firmly.

"you wanna open an airlock in flight on a ship spinning into the sun, no one can survive that." scannell tried, but the couple continued to buckle up the straps on their suits securely.

"how much d'you want to bet?" callisto retorted.

"you open that airlock, it's suicide. this close to the sun, the shields'll barely protect you." scannell added, despite the fact they definitely would not budge on giving up the idea.

"if i can boost the magnetic lock on the ship's exterior, it should magnetise the pod. callisto's staying inside and holding onto me. now, while we're out there, you have got to get the rest of those doors open. we need those auxiliary engines." the doctor explained.

"will you pair listen, they're too far away! it's too late!" scannell snapped.

"we're not gonna lose her." the doctor replied lowly, a spark of rage behind the determination in his eyes.

with no way of stopping them, scannell moved out of their way and the pair locked their helmets into place, checked over each others oxygen tubes and straps to make sure they were safe. once everything was certainly safe, minus the possibility of falling into the sun, they stepped into the pod room, the door sliding closed, airtight, behind them.

"decompression initiated. impact in 11:15. heat shields failing at 10%."

with the room decompressed, callisto pressed a gloved finger onto the button to open the airlock. immediately, the metal beneath their feet began to tremble and they grimaced at the high force blowing against them. the doctor gripped onto the corner of the opening and started to tug himself closer.
