'Did their soul recognize me?'

Once Bela finished her explanation of what the chores would be and the expectations put in place, I followed her out of the room and through the hall. I slowed to a stop after noticing her stop, turning slightly to look back at her. She didn't need to speak for me to know what she was going to ask — she wasn't told the news. I gently gripped her arm and guided her into my room, sitting her on the bed before beginning.

"Remember the day I said I lost contact with Isa?"

"Yeah, Dani was devastated..."

"Well, it turns out they chose to be reborn," I chuckled and scratched the back of my neck. "My family only had eyes on them for a few years... It wasn't until recently that we caught wind of them again. I'm finding all of this out today too. The good news is, they don't seem terribly different from before."

"Yeah, I noticed that," Bela muttered before standing up. "I hope this means Dani can be happy again."

"I do too. So, do you think you'll try going for a maid?"

"Not a mortal one. So, no."

"Live a little, Bela," I laughed and cupped her cheeks. "If you don't want a human, whoever Isa was with is also a demigod, you could try going after her."

"...She was cute..." Bela trailed before shaking her head. "I'm going to bed!"

I laughed as she left, heading to my bathroom once she shut my door behind her. As I ran bath water, a knock at my door grabbed my attention, causing me to leave my bathroom and open the door to the hall. Isa stood before me, fidgeting with a ring they wore.

My lips twitched as I took in the detail of the ring — recalling them having a similar one in their previous life. I stepped to the side and watched them hesitantly step inside, deciding to go turn off my water before speaking with them. When I returned to their side, they flinched and let out a squeak, a flash of fear crossing their eyes.

"I-I can't explain—."

"I can," I chuckled, watching their face contort into a confused pout. "In the future. For now, you need to get adjusted to the castle. Come to me next week and ask again, okay?"

"What are you?" They asked softly, their jaw flexing and bringing my attention to the slightly fresh scar on their cheek.

"How did you get this?!" I yelped and cupped their face, gently tracing the scar.

"Let go!" They huffed and moved away from me, sending me a glare. "I'll have you know that I—."

"You are the child of the God of the Underworld. King of the Dead. I know. I am as well."

Their face slowly shifted from outrage to one of shocked understanding, eyebrows lifted slightly and lips parted in a small 'o'. They cleared their throat and straightened themself out, a pink hue covering their cheeks moments later. I let out a giggle and patted their shoulder, shifting my gaze back to their scar.

"Now—."

"Gramps," They growled, their eyebrows knitting together out of anger. "But, I got it saving a kid so... I guess I don't mind it."

"You saved a kid?"

"Mhm. Orphan, by the looks of it. He won't stop calling me 'mama' either," They grumbled and fought to keep the smile off of their face. "I kinda like it..."
