"...What we-?" Cassandra trailed before a flustered buzz left her. "...That's right — our promise."
Year: ????
"Cass!" I called, walking deeper into the forest. "Cass! It's-it's scary."
"No, it's not!" Cassandra laughed from ahead. "Come on! Don't- Don't be a b-baby!"
"...Not a baby," I muttered with a frown, running until I caught up with her. "...How far?"
Cassandra huffed and stopped, turning to face me with a frown. '...I upset her.'
"I-I'm s-sorry," I dropped my head and fidgeted with my shirt. "I-I'll shut up."
"...We're almost there," Cassandra promised before taking my hand in hers. "...I have a pw-pwo-pr-. Pr-o-promise."
"Not mad?"
"No. Never- never with you."
I smiled and squeezed her hand, walking with her while swinging our arms. 'Cass will never be mad at me? I like that,' I nearly giggled at the thought, stopping when she did. 'Friends. Forever.' Cassandra picked a flower and placed it in my hair before facing me, smiling as she grabbed my other hand.
"Why here?"
"For the pwomise."
"Pr-Promise?"
"Yeah! That! I pr-promise, we'll get m-m-ma-married! To each other!"
I returned the smile before shaking my head. "How?"
Cassandra frowned and dropped her gaze. "...Don't know. I'll find out! I'll- I'll keep y-you safe, forever!"
"You will?"
"Promise!"
"...I'll d-do the same."
"How?" Cassandra huffed, making me whimper. "...No sad-! I sorry!"
"I-I'll fi-find out how!" I promised as she hugged me. "I promise."
Present
"What promise?" Hunter inquired, making me clear my throat with a smile.
"One that we made before we were given the cadou," Cassandra answered as she started coloring. "That we would get married and protect each other forever."
"...Talk about soulmates," Isa chuckled before yawning. "Did you tell my past self that?"
"No," I hummed, coloring the other page in the book. "We kept it between us. It wasn't much of a story anyway."
"[Y/N] was scared of the forest, so I had to protect her," Cassandra purred.
"It was getting dark!"
"And I would've protected you if anything happened!"
"You were barely older than me!"
"I was stronger."
"...Shut up," I huffed, making the others giggle. "We were kids! The forest is scary at night to a little kid."
"Really?" Isa teased. "Your nephew doesn't seem scared."
"That's not fair, and you know it."
Isa laughed, running their fingers through Costin's hair. "Yeah, good point. Mind cutting his hair tomorrow? It's getting long."
"He likes it long!" I huffed. "It shows more of the white in his hair."
"Then cut the dead ends?"
"Fine, but he won't be happy. He cries every time I have to cut it."
Hunter giggled and glanced at me. "I'll tell him it's okay. He thinks it'll upset me because he remembers how happy I was when my hair started turning white."
"...That explains why he runs off afterward," I hummed, glancing at Costin. "He doesn't know his human grandparents, so he doesn't know why you hated your black hair, right?"
"Right."
"And he knows I love his black and white hair," Isa joined.
"Sounds to me like he just likes having hair that matches both parents," Bela giggled. "Isa's black hair and Hunter's white hair."
"Agreed," Hunter smiled, turning her attention to her sleeping son. "I love his hair too. It's his own."
Three Hours Later
"[Y/N]," Cassandra yawned as she snuggled into me. "Remember the other promise I made you?"
"...You made a lot."
"I kept most of them. There's one I need to keep now."
"Oh? We're not married yet, so that's still one."
"...Fine, two. I have two to keep. The other will be soon!"
I giggled and turned on my side, facing her before pecking her lips. "Refresh my memory."
"Well," Cassandra trailed, ghosting her fingers up my thigh under the blanket. "It includes painting."
'Paint me naked,' I nearly laughed at the memory that surfaced. "If I recall correctly, that promise was an accident and flustered you so much that you couldn't speak to me for a week after."
"I-I was shocked you suggested it!"
"I was shocked you agreed," I laughed. "Especially with how silent and still you went. What were you thinking of? We weren't dating at the time."
Cassandra cleared her throat in an attempt to cover up her flustered buzz. "I-I-. No comment."
"Oh, no, now you have to tell me. By the way, that's the real promise I meant."
"I thought so."
"We just couldn't bring it up around the others."
"Exactly," Cassandra hummed, gripping my thigh and pulling me closer. "Come closer. You're warm."
I laughed and snuggled into her further, pecking her lips with a smile. "Your body temperature is back to normal-."
"And I like holding you."
"Fair enough," I giggled, shifting to press her face against my neck. "About our wedding-."
"It'll be perfect, I promise. Everything will be as perfect as you."
I smiled at her sleepy murmur, knowing she needed more rest anyway. 'Tomorrow will be spent with her,' I hummed as I ran my fingers through Cassandra's hair. 'I'll let her paint me, but what should we do before then? Maybe I can make her breakfast? No, she'll wake up when I try to leave her grasp.' Cassandra purred while I continued my actions, sleep welcoming her quickly. 'Adorable.'
My gaze shifted to the door when it opened, sending her mother a smile as she entered the room. Lady Dimitrescu returned the smile when she sat down, her eyes shifting to her daughter. 'It's understandable why she's worried; I just wish there was something I could say or do to ease her concerns.' When her eyes shifted back to me, I let out a nervous laugh and cleared my throat. 'Right, my heart- she can hear it.'
"Go on," Lady Dimitrescu mused. "What's on your mind?"
"...I just feel ba-."
"Don't. It wasn't your fault — you didn't order him to come in and kidnap her. He was here to kill you, [Y/N]. Cassandra would've been worse if he had succeeded. Let's just be glad no one died."
I let out a relieved sigh before nodding at her. "Agreed."
